Taiaroa arrived at 7.45 a.m. from Wellington, Nelson, a:;0. Picton, to return North to-night. The Star of India wa3 towed to the stream yesterday. The pressure of cargo for tho s.s. Penguin, for the North, was so »rfat on Thursday that it was found nrcessary io d»tain the steamer until yesterday, when she left for Wellington. The totals of shipping for March quarter of 1830 entered and cleared at the Port of Lyttelton wero— 117 vessels, 85 143 registered tonnage : outwards, 429 vessels, S 3 603 registered tonnage Fifteen vessels, of 17.259 registered tonnage, cleared for the United Kingdom during tho quarter ju*t expired, as against ten vessels, of 10,631 tons, for the corresponding quarter of 1879, an inovexs!) of qnita 61 per cent, in the tonnsga dispatched to the old country in first quarter of 18S0 over that of 1879. The barque Especulador and schooners Elizabeth Curie and Onward were yesterday offered at auction by Messrs Matson. and Co. The first was withdrawn at £l5O, and the Onward at £550. There was no offer for the JKlizabeth Curie. Tha ship Salamanca, loaded by the New Zealand Shipping Company, tripped her anchor at 10 a.m. yesterday and towed to eea, on her voyage to London. As a record of fast work in the stevedore line that of the Salamanca is worthy of note. The ship, as was stated yesterday, was berthed on March 26th. She finished loading last Wednesday, and allowing for Sundays, Good Friday, and the deductions for Bhort Saturdays and steppage from wet weather, the result 13 twelve full working days. Not much ghort of 2700 tons of cargo, representing her inward and outward cargo, wore handled in that time, or an average per dsy of 225 tons. News was telephoned from the lookout station at the Lytteltan Heads yesterday that what appeared to be a large mass of wreckage floating in the water, and distant about sixteen miles to the N.N.E. wa3 visible. The Harbor Board's steam tug Lyttelton was immediately upon receipt of the news despatched to the spot indicated, and on her return reported finding a dead whale fully eighty feet bng. The water around wa3 alive with sharks. Until quite close those en board the tug took it to bo a vessel bottom np. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Bluff, April 17.
