In every way the meetii-g was mo si; SUOCessful The weather was charming, the attendance was excellent, snd the racing ot tho first order. The course, which is a very good one, was a Utile heavy owing to the heavy rain of the night previous, and tb.9 time made was, in consequence, not very fast. With toe exception of the first race, which was delayed for the arrival of the Chrixtchurch train, tho various events were got off with most commendable punctuality. The arrangements ■were very Rood, and wo were gkd to notice that the club had erected a very good saddlm;; paddock, which it is intended to enlarge by next season. Mr Shanks, the energetic secretary, wa3 here, there, and everywhere, and it is to bo hoped that he »ill continue to fill that position. Mr Murray turned out m good style as clerk of the course, and Mr J. Cunningham was the right man in the right piece as clerk of tho scales. Mr Mathias, as usual, officiated as judge. The Springfield Colliery Band put in an appearance, and added materially to the enjoyment of the day. Mr Davies was the citerer, and gave universal ■atisfaclion. The totalisator, under tho supervision of Mr LeSeur, passed over £2OO through during the day. Altogether, the meeting was the moat successful ever held in the Kowai, and the next year's meeting is expected to be still bettor, both in stakes and general arrangements. Constables Warren and Watson were on tho ground, but Vartr duties were of the lightest kind. The Bport commenced with tho Trial Stakes, for which the West Coast winner, Satellite, was a Btroig favorite. He, however, cut up badly, and tho race was won prefty easily bv Pippin. The Publicans' Cup was a gift to Elfin King, and then four weighed out for the big event of the day, tho Spungueld Plate. Then Mr J. Luun scored a well deserved win with Marie Antoinette, who running very truly from end to end, won by a length from Randwiek, the favourite, Orange Peel being a poor third. Mireille ran fairly •while she lasted, but was never formidable after the first mile and a half. The Hurdle Baca was more or loss a chapter of accidents, but it was a good finish between Sivindler and Te Kooti. The former, who is a fast improving horse, just won by a length after a good race. Tawera fell, and Kensington, well ridden by Taylor, came to grief during trie race. -Lagh Mohr was the only one that got round, with the exception of the first two. Elfin King was a strong favourite for the District Race, but Clifford's good horsemanship put the stake to the credit of Mr Rutherford with Magic. The win was a. very popular one, and the horse was heartily cheered on returning to scale. The Ladies' Purso produced a large field, and was, as might have been expected, a gift to Marie Antoinette, whoae only formidable opponent turned up in Pippin. Tho Hack Kaco brought out a field of eight, and was won after a capital race by Mr Button's Black Besß. The Consolation Stake was the race of the day, and Derritt, who rode Orange Peel with consummate judgment, just won it on the post by a head from Mireille, Blazing Star, the only other competitor, being out-paced. A protest against Elfin King in the Publicans' Cup, on the ground of his not being a district horse, was disallowed. Details are apepnded. Tkial Stakes, 15 sovs ; weight for age ; 1£
