The following appears in the "Argus," of March 31»t : LONDON, March 30. Although they have no distinctive foreign programme, save that they will not destroy Lord Beaconefield'a work, the Liberals are more united than their recent votes in Parliament on questions of foreign policy would have led people to expeot. The instances are fow in which more than one Liberal candidate stands far the same seat. There is increasing evidence that the_ working men are taking more interest in the elections than on previous occasions. There is enormous excitement over the borough elections, which take place this week. Although the state of trade is improving, the bulk of the poople are not touched by the improvement. In the attack on Port Battye at Futtehebad, a town in the plain of Jelalabad, Lieutenant Angelo and twelve men wero killed and nineteen wounded. The enemv was dispersed. AUCKLAND, April 10. The German war ship Bismarck arrived from Sydney to-day. The following items appear in the Australian papers brought by her : LONDON, March 31. Unusual interest is being taken in the elections, and party feeling runs very high. Riots have taken place at Cardiff and Tyrone. General Stewart has commenced to march on Ghuznee with a strong and well equipped force, and will immediately give battle to Mahomed Jan, who is in possession of this stronghold. The Marquis of Hartington, while explaining the colonial policy of the Liberals in a speeoh yesterday, said that while leaving the ■, colonies in a great measure to protect themselves against the hostilities of neighbors, he would defend them with the whole force of the Empire if attacked by foreign powers. The Americans are building steamers on the Strathleven principle for the shipment of froz?n meat to England. Vessels will also be fitted up for the conveyance of livo cattle from America. It is reported that there are heavy wheat crops on the Pacific coast. April 1. The result of the election?, so far, has caused profound surprise. The heavy Voting by the working-men in favour of the Liberals was secured by a promise that the policy of Lord Beacons fit-Id should not be disturbed, though it is evident that if the Liberals have a large majority they will attempt to join in the coercion with other European powers of Turkey. The hope of a Tory majority is already destroyed, and it is estimated that the result of this election will be that the Liberals, Radicals, and Home Rulers will have a majority of over thirty. The Marquis of Hartington or Lord Grauville will lead the Liberals. Mr Gladstone will have a portfolio in the new Ministry. The Tories have a majority in the city. Stocks have fallen.
Sir S. Waterlow, Sir J. E. Lubbock, Sir J. Goldsmidt, and Messrs S. D. Waddy and H. C. Rakes were rejected. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy intends remaining at Monaco for some time.
