NEWS OF THE DAY.

Bible Chkistians. —The Rev. J. Crewes will preach in the Templar Hall, Worcester street, to-morrow morning, and in the Bible Christian Church, Addington, to-morrow evening. Services at 10.30 and 6.30. Subject for the day—“ Resurrection of Lazarus.” The Rev. W. H. Keast is still very ill. Arrangements are being made to build a church as soon as practicable on the site purchased at the corner of Ferry road and Wilson street, and a meeting is to be held at Templeton next week to organise a society and to elect trustees that a church may soon be built on a piece of land which has been purchased for this purpose at Templeton. Lattbe-Day Saints. —As seen by advertisement, services will be held by this church in the Orange Hall, at 3.30 and 6.30 p.m. In the evening Elder George Batt will preach, when the subject will be “The Resurrection as taught by Revelation.” Undenominational Chueou. —As will be seen by advertisement, services will be held by this church in Mr Gee’s schoolroom, Worcester street, to-morrow at 11 a.m. and 630 p.m. In the morning Mr Griffin will preach; in the afternoon the Rev. Walter Harris, who, his friends will be glad to hear, has recovered from his recent indisposition, and is ready to resume work again. United Methodist Fees Ohhech, Colombo Road. —An entertainment, consisting of readings, recitations, and singing, was given in the above church, on Thursday evening last, to a good gathering, in aid of the trust fund, which was presided over by Mr J. T. Brown, Mayor of Sydenham. Mr Smith and friends took the musical part of the programme. The recitations were given by Messrs Pillow, Turner, Steele, and Hocking, and the readings by Revs. Perry and Peters, and Mr J. A. Oaygill. The most amusing part of the entertainment was a dialogue given by the youths of the Sunday school, which evoked much applause. It has been decided by the Church, as the population in the district is increasing, and more and better accommodation is required, to hold a series of entertainments during the winter season, the proceeds of which are to bo devoted to that object.

Scandinavian Church. — A well-aU ended meeting of members of the Scandinavian Lutheran Church took place on Thursday night in the Q-erman Church, for the purpose of considering the question of amalgamating with the present evangelical congregation of the above church. The Rev. P. Q-. Jacobson, pastor of the church, opened the meeting with prayer, after which the main proposal was brought before the meeting, and, after having been well discussed for some time, it was unanimously agreed that the amalgamation should take place ; and, further, that the service in the Scandinavian language be hold as hitherto, viz., every alternate Sunday afternoon, at half-past throe o’clock. A hearty vote of thanks to the Rev. pastor for hisstedfast devotion to his call brought the meeting to a close.

Muff Cbicket.— Owing to tho rain, the closing match of the season in connection with the Christchurch Muff Cricket Club, which was fixed for yesterday, was postponed. Supreme Coubt.— The nisi prius sitting of tho Supreme Court opens on Monday next before his Honor Mr Justice Johnston. The first case to be tried will be Bracken (“ Saturday Advertiser ”) v. Darrell, for libel.

Legal. The many friends of Mr A. Loughroy, for soma time bond master of the Gloucester street school, will be glad to learn that, having been admitted a member of the New Zealand bar by his Honor Mr Justice Williams in Dunedin, he has entered into practice in Christchurch in conjunction with Messrs M‘ Jonnel and Douglas. Generosity. —ln the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, on Tuesday last, at the conclusion of the ease of Poder v Prince, in whioA the plaintiff was nonsuited, Mr H. Prince handed £lO, the amount sued for, to the Resident Magistrate, for some charitable institution, leaving his worship to dispose of as he thought fit. German Krauzchbn.—The members of the German Club “ Concordia” held their first “ Dancen Krauzchen” last night in their club room, Wellington Hotel. About fifty couples were present, and the whole affair was a most enjoyable one. The party separated at an early hour, having spent a most pleasant evening, to the success of which Mrs Fuchs, the hostess, contributed in no small degree. This is intended as the first of a series of similar gatherings.

An Involuntary Bath. —A young gentleman, of decent exterior, was observed swimming about with his clothes on in the river orp site the British Hotel yesterday evening. On landing he was asked by one or two curious bystanders how ho came to be bathing in his “ walk-a-day ” costume, to which the young man replied that he had “slipped in,” and then made a hasty retreat to the British Hotel.

The Drainage Rate. —A meeting in relation to the drainage rate levied in the Avon district was held last evening at Kuightstown, Mr Wilson, chairman of the local Road Board, in the chair. A good deal of discussion took place, and a resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the district did not reap a commensurate amount of benefit for the rate levied. It has been resolved to hold meetings on the subject at Bapanui and Bingsland. One Tongue Enough. —“No,” exclaimed Mr Penhecker, “No, madam, I object most decidedly. Once and for all I say it —the girls shall not be taught foreign languages.” “And why not, prey?” said Mrs P., with withering sarcasm. “ Because,” said Mr P., with more withering sarcasm, “ because, Mrs P., one tongue is enough for any woman!” Mrs Penhecker responded not. Colombo Road Wesleyan Church.— According to advertisement in another column tho anniversary sermons in connection with, this church will be preached to-morrow morning and evening by the Rev. J. S. Rishworth, who was appointed to take charge of the Colombo road circuit by the conference held in Dnnedin in January last. On Thursday, the 15th inat., instead of the usual tea meeting, tho Rev. Alex. Reid will deliver a lecture on “ Woman’s Influence. At the same time Mr Rishworth will receive a hearty welcome to the circuit. During the evening some special selections of music will be rendered by the choir of the church.
