When a Bwsefc little child chips up carelessly and rests its molasses-smeared fingers on your light cassimeres, it is well enough for you to remember that of such is the kingdom of heaven. At a christening, while • the minister was making his certificate he inquired the day of the month, and happened to say, “ Let me see, this the thirtieth.” “The thirtieth!” exclaimed the indignant mother, “indeed, but it’s only the nineteenth.” “ Does he know anything ?” anxiously inquired a friend, bending over the body of the man who had just fallen from the roof of a house. “Don’t know, I’m sure,” the physician replied ; “he never did know anything, but you can’t tell what effect the full may have had upon him until he regains consciousness.” Mr Chauncey M. Depew told this story at the recent New England dinner. In the Berkshire Hills there was a funeral. The woman who mingles curiosity with pity was there with the mourners. To the afflicted widow, in a melancholy voice, she said, “ When did you get your new eight-day clock?” “I ain’t got no new eight-day clock!” persisted the bereaved woman. “ Why, what is that in the corner ? Ain’t that on eight-day clock ?” persisted the curious visitor. “ No, that ain’t a clock, that’s the deceased. We stood it on end to make room for mourners.”
