HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, LYTTELTON.
Tho incumbent, the Rev. J. Townsend, prosided at the annual meeting of the parishioners, held in the schoolroom on Monday night. The Chairman opened the meeting with prayer, after which ho made some remarks upon the year’s work of the church, in which he spoke of the mission to seamen in Port. Tho Diocesan Synod had passed a resolution that a special grant of £2OO be made towards providing a place of worship for sailors at Lyttelton, and a sum of £SO be allotted from the Church Property Trust grant towards the of a clergyman who should undertake the ministra* tions to seamen. He said, so far, these resolutions in their results were almost nil. It gave him pleasure, however, to state that the Kev. Mr Davidson had met with considerable success in his mission to seafaring men. He was unaware what course would eventually be taken in respect to giving effect to the resolutions referred to.
Captain Gibson (minister’s warden) then read the vestry’s report. During the past year, they bad sold the old parsonage and grounds for .£1145, and had accepted Mr Stinson’s tender for a new parsonage for .£1074. A temporary parsonage bad been rented pending tho completion of the new one, and arrangements made with the Church Property Trustees to advance funds at a low rate of interest to complete tho new structure until the final payments on the old property matured. In reference to the cemetery fund, the vestry regretted to report that it was insolvent. The vestry had in tho meantime defrayed the necessary expenses of tho cemetery from tho general expense fund. Dr. Eouao read tho financial report, showing a debit balance of .£7l 8a 2d. Summarised it was as follows :—Offertories, .£245 Is 2d; pew rents, £152 15s; special subscriptions, £3O ; collected by ladies, £29 5s 6d ; sundry receipts, £ls 15s 9d. The expenditure side included a balance from the year before of £B9 13a; salaries, £349 18s 7d ; lighting and incidentals, £lO4 14s. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Mr H. R. Webb read the Sunday school balance sheet, showing a debit of £1 2s. The Melanesian Mission, attending which the school had one of its number, showed an outlay of £lO Is Id.
The Sunday school accounts were then adopted aa read, and tho meeting proceeded to elect officers, with tho following result—Clergyman’s warden, Dr. Rouse; vestrymen, Messrs S. Dorbidge, F. D. Gibson, J. Dawo, H. Allwright, W. Whitby, and H. M. Spencer; auditors, Mc-sra Cotton and Lance.
A special vote of thanks was passed to the ladies who collected money to reduce the debt; also to the outgoing vestry. The Chairman in flattering terms proposed a vote of thanks to the choir, and Mr H. N. Nalder to Mr H. R. Webb, who was leaving the parish. Tho meeting concluded with a few remarks from tho chairman, in which he referred to the good feeling evinced at the meeting.
