SCULLING MATCH.

On Wednesday morning a sculling match, the outcome of the previous day’s regatta, was rowed at Kaiapoi between D. J. Taylor, Lyttelton, and J. Perrin, Kaiapoi, in double sculling boats, lent by the Cure club. The former won the toss for pick of boats, and had a little the best of it in choosing the lightest one. The distance was for two miles on flood tide. Both kept close together in a waiting race for the first half mile, when Taylor began to draw away, and both put more energy into the contest. The last mile was rowed in very good time, but the local oarsman was not able to overhaul the visitor, varying distances of from two to four lengths separating the boats. Taylor won with four lengths in hand. There were about one hundred persons present to witness the match. It is reported that Perrin was prepared to make a further match, to be rowed in a fortnight, which would give him time to go into training.
