Aoadbmy op Music.—The "Merchant of Venice ” wag produced la*t evening at the Academy of Music, Miss Bowring appeared as Portia, and gave a very excellent rendering of the character throughout. She was especially good in the court scene, the well known speech, “ The quality of mercy,” being rendered with much purity of elocution and absence of the exaggeration one so frequently hears in the delivery of these lines. Miss Jennie Nye made a merry Nerissa, and Miss Arethusa May was very good as Jessica. Mr Burford’s Shy lock was a meritorious performance, and the rest of the characters were well filled. To-night “ The Woman in Red ” will be played, and on Friday Mr Burford will take his benefit, for which “ Hamlet " will be given, with Miss Bowring as tho Queen, Miss Arethusa May as ;Ophelia, and Mr Burford as Hamlet.
Salb op a Fleet. —This morning Messrs H. Matson and 00., by instructions from Mr F. Jenkins, submitted to public auction his fleet of vessels employed in the timber trade. Mr R. Walton wielded the hammer, but in spite of his utmost powers of eloquence failed to evoke any enthusiasm on tho part of tho few persons present. The first lot was the barque Especulador, 262 tons register, which was started at £7OO, and withdrawn. The next vessel put up was the topsail schooner Elizabeth Curie, 76 tons register, withdrawn at £2OO. For the next lot, the fore-and-aft schooner Onward, there was no bid, although the auctioneer described her as the “ gem” of the fleet, and entreated the reporters to speculate in her for the purpose of making pleasure trips to the Sounds. The last lot submitted was the ketch Lucy James, started at £SO, and which, after a great deal of eloquence from Mr Walton, gradually mounted to £IOO, at which figure she was knocked down to Mr Mclntosh of Pigeon Bay, the auctioneer stating as an inducement to competition that the insurance at present on her was £250.
