KAIAPOI REGATTA.

Dr. Dudley, commodore; judge, MrEckersley; starter, Mr G. F. Day ; committee, Messrs Buraip, Wearing, Clark, Thome, J. H. Moore, E. Moore, Pattman, Piper, Pearce, Fraser, C. Smith, Ovenden, Mathers, Blackwell, Whitefoord, Isaac Wilson, W. B. May, Balch, and Bernays. The thirteenth annual regatta at Kaiapoi was held on Tuesday, and wa3 as s-uccessful as any of the previous ones. In the town a general holiday was observed, and tho hotels and other buildings were gay with flags, From an early kour large numbers of persons assembled, but the trains, owing to the Bhoct notice given of the excursion fares, were not so well patronised a 3 tho railway might have been. The banks of the river near the town have lately become much covered with overgrowth of trees, and the views of the race 3 were not so good as usual. For the distance of half a mile through the borough the embankment formed a capital stand, and eeveral family parties not only obtained a sight extending to half a mile of the finish, but were able to enjoy the shade of trees from the very hot Bun. The committee took up its quarters on the wharf, in Eaven street, and amongst the gentlemen present it was pleasing to all to see l»r. Dudley, the veteran commodore, able to be present. At the last moment the committee had to fall back on a former starter, who always gave every satisfaction, viz., Mr J. Sims, who discharged his onerous duties on Tuesday in a manner which left no room for complaint. Mr Eckersley was at his post as judge, but the hon. secretary had to retire from a sudden attack of illness early in the day, which was to be regretted, as ke might have enforced closer punctuality in the events. Behind the wharf were arranged the stalls and the games, some of which would out do " that Heathen Chinee." The events came off in the following order : Sailing race; open to all; about 6 miles. Ist prize, .£5; 2nd, £l. Mr J. Eoberts' Lyttelton (length, 21ft.; beam, 4ft. 6in.; 1 ton) 1 Mr C. E. Dudley's Aria (length, 25ft. 4in.; beam sft. 4 in. ; 3 tons) ... 2 Mr \V. Hill's Lotus (length, 18ft.; beam, sft. Gin.; lj tons) 0 Mr Sims effected a level st&rt from the town, sending the boats down stream, the N.W. breeze being light and puffy. The Lyttelton was. the first to catch the wind, followed by the Lotus, the Ariel hanging. Nearing Lock's, the wind, which was aft, fanned np, and tho craft sailed along at a fair pice, tho Lyttelton all the timo gaining. Off Saltwater Crfek Lyttelton and Lotus put out square sails, but the Ariel following suit received a check in the entire i ipping up of that sail. At the Fisherman's the Lyttelton turned first, followed by the Lotus, the Ariel making up distance. In beating up the Lotus, usually good at tho game, had to make way for the Ariel at Lcck'a Point, and a smart piece of sailing took place for second place. Lyttelton won. Time, lh. 1-lmin. 38sec. Ariel was Oinin. later, with Lotus two lengths astern Junior Pair-Oared Eace (under eighteen) ; ' one and a half miles ; opon to all clubs. Ist prize, £1; 2nd, £l. Cam (Cure B.C.)—C. Wright, 1; J. Winterbourne, stroke ; F. Day, cox. ... ... 1 Sylph (TJ.K.C.)—J. E Johnston, 1 ; F. Moule. stroke ; W. H. Wok'dge, cox. ... 2 The Sylph went away well fo? a mile, and kept up to the Cure, but tho latter had the race well in hand, and won with something to spare, although tho Union juniors rowed a very game race throughout. Champion Four-Oared Eace; three miles np stream, opan to all clubs. Ist prize, .£'2o ; 2nd, £5. Cam (Cure 8.0 )—l, E. Paj, lOst 101 b ; 2, J. Perrin, 12st 81b ; 3, G. Wright, list 71b; stroke, J. Dixon, Cst 2 I After a delay, dnrbg which tho nor-westar

had increased and tho tide began to ebb, the crews—lllysus, north bank, Cam Bonth—having each answered " \es" to Air pirns' '" Are you ready?" and he had replied ."Uno, two, tbree, off," there was a momentary pause before they gave a simultaneous clip with their oars and were under weigh. Jones' men seemed never more determined to make a race for it, and pulling a splendid stroke of ahott thirty-six, drew ont the metal of tho local crew, who, seeing that the Ilyssus was bent on leaving them, piled it on, and went into a swinging stroke of thirty-eight, which in the first halfmile brought tho Cam on the Illyssus' quarter. Tho latter crew here put on a magnificeut spurt and sent tho boat Ehooting along in the next half mile, obtaining a clear lead of two lengths. Weston called lustily to his men to lift the old Cam, andinthe nextquarter, mile, through bumpy water, occurred the most exciting part of the race. The crews had both fallen into one stroke of thirty-seven to thirty-eight, and were moving along to a merry tune. At Ellen's wool works the Illyssus was steered a trifle wide, and tho Cam cox. seeing his advantage gained for his men at least a couple of oars' length by judicious steering, and took the Illyssus' water. Passing from the south into the north branch of the river the lllvssns camo on again, and as the calls proceeded freely to the crews to "'' Put it on," it was seen that both were straining every nerve, the Cam with a half-length in advance. Keating the wharves the lllysfua gave another half length, and coming in were a clear length short. The race was watched with intense intense interest, and loud cheering greeted both crews for their honest slogging to make a win. Time —18min. 25secs.

The local crew made some demur to the start, but then took up the race, and were in the tail all the way. The Dolphin crew found the Lytteltonians more than an even match, as \.he Rotomahana won easily.
