CEMETERY BOARD.
The Cemetery Board held their usual monthly meeting at 3 p.m. on Monday. Present—Mr J. P. Jameson (in the chair), the Revs. H. O. M. Watson and 0. Fraser, and Mr Ballantyne. The Chairman reported that a deputation had waited upon him from the Ministers' Association for the purpose of inquiring when the cemetery would be available for interments. He had informed them that the requisite steps were being taken by the Board to have the cemetery opened as speedily as possible, and that the deputation should wait upon the Board and state their requirements, and the former would endeavor to satisfy their requirements. Three members of the Board had visited the cemetery on the 3rd ult., and were impressed with the urgent necessity of urging the Avon Hoad Board to complete the improvements of the road leading thither, et the same time acknowledging that through a considerable length much good work had been done, and it required only the part connecting the canal reserve with the cemetery to be attended to. The Chairman further stated that he had interviewed the Avon Road Board, who acknowledged the necessity of the work, but pleaded want of funds at the present time, the estimated cost being £250. The matter had been placed before the Selwyn County Council in the hope that with the money in their hands, a portion of which was held to the credit of the Avon Road Board, should be used to defray at least a portion of the expense. The County Council in their turn urged on the Board the advisability of applying to the City Council for a grant, on the ground that the cemetery was for the general benefit of the citizens, but the County Council themselves declined to vote the assistance asked for.
A discussion took place as to the desirability of getting a portion of the cemetery, if only a'limited area, ready for use as soon as possible, by the formation of ;paths, and the planting of shrubs and flowers ; the division into plots for the several denominations being arranged subsequently. It was resolved, on the motion of the Rev. H. 0. M. Watson, seconded by Rev. 0. Fraser, “ The chairman be authorised to advance to a state of preparedness for opening ten or twelve acres of the general cemetery.” The Rev. Mr Watson said, that from a conversation he had had with a director of the Tramway Company ho was sanguine that they would, on a proper consideration, be willing to cooperate with the Board in connecting the city with the cemetery. The Rev, Mr Fr-.ser thought with Mr Watson that such cooperation would bo the real practical method of carrying out the obiect they had in view. It was resolved—“ That a deputation, consisting of the Rev. C. Fraser, the Rev. H. C. M. Watson, Mr Jno. Anderson, and the chairman, confer with the Tramway Company with the view to promote a line to the cemetery.” The chairman laid on the table the new map of the cemetery, prepared by Messrs. Blanchard and Mclntyre. The account for preparing the same was passed for payment. This terminated the business, and the Board adjourned.
