SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council took place last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor and Ors. White, Langdown, Andrew, Nicholls, Hall, Charters, Shierlaw, and Pavitt. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary’s office, informing the Council that the Government could not advise his Excellency to make the Borough of Sydenham a separate vaccination district, but if sufficient reason could be shown for the appointment of another vaccinator, such appointment would be made, the operations of that officer to be confined exclusively to the Borough. A letter was read from the Under Secretary enclosing a copy of a “ Gazette ” containing an Order in Council vesting the Addington Market Reserve in the Corporation as a recreation ground, in place of a Market Reserve as originally contemplated. A circular letter was received from the secretary Melbourne Exhibition Commission, to be opened on the Ist October, 1880, enclosing a copy of the general regulations, and desiring to know whether the Council desired to have their exhibits of local views returned on the close of the Sydney Exhibition, on April 20th, or retained for the International Exhibition in the sister colony. Or. Andrew moved —“That the question bo left in the hands of the Exhibition Commissioners to present the views to any public body that desired them.”
The resolution was agreed to. Mr J. 8. Williams, solicitor, wrote on behalf of Mr A. Anderson, relative to the alleged nuisances created by the recent erection of the borough bathing sheds on the bank of the Heathcote river. A letter was also read from the chairman of the Sydenham school committee, drawing attention to the want of a swimming bath in connection with the school, which placed the lads at a disadvantage as compared with other schools. On the motion of Cr. Hall, the letter was referred to the works committee with power to act. With reference to the second letter, it was resolved —“ That it bo an instruction to report on the practicability of forming a swimming bath at the reserve adjoining Wilson’s bridge or elsewhere.” A letter was read from the town clerk_ of Christchurch, enclosing resolutions respecting the management of hospitals and the distribution of charitable aid by municipal bodies.
The works committee in their report recommended the forming and channelling of a private street off Colombo road on the ratepayers handing over to the Council £lB, the estimated coat of same. With respect to a petition of ratepayers on the Devon road, the committee recommended the Council to do the work requested. They further recommended the formation of the Windmill road to the levels shown on the borough map, and the formation of a footpath on one side of the road for the present. The report was received and adopted. With respect to the proposed footpath on the Windmill road, it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Hall, that the clerk bo instructed to take the signatures of the ratepayers as to whether the footpath be on the east or west side of the road. The finance committee reported that the receicts for the past fortnight amounted to £146 10s lid; accounts to be paid, £365 4s 4d, and the balance at the bank £1407 7s lOd. The report as read was received and adopted. It was resolved—“ That the works committee should ascertain the estimated cost of planting the Market reserve at Addington with shrubs and ornamental trees ; also, if land can be procured for the widening of the Windmill road at Harman’s corner.” Cr. Charters drew the attention of the works committee to the condition of the gravel pits on Wilson’s road, which were gradually undermining it, and by their encroachment on the edge were dangerous also to the public. On the motion of Or. Joyce it was resolved to ask the Government to appoint Dr. Anderson as public vaccinator for Sydenham, his operations to be confined within the limits of the borough. . The matter of employing extra clerical assistance in the preparation of the burgess roll was left in the hands of the finance committee, ai d as an extension of time would bo needed the clerk was instructed to procure a validation order. The Council then went into committee to consider the Oha itable Aid and Hospital Bill, and subsequently adjourned.
