WEANING CALVES.

I observe a correspondent asks if any one ■will give him an experience upon weaning calves upon skim milk, linseed meal, &c. For my own part, I do not see what more experience he requires, when he writes to say he has weaned from thirty to forty calves upon skim milk, linseed meal, &0,, every year, and never had more than five cows to work from. I have myself tried the skim milk process, giving each calf a good supply three times a day, but in all cases I have been disappointed. I have always found the calves grow badly and out of shape, and a twelvemonth before they get into a nice growing form. A far better plan I will give my experience of, and that is—when a cow calves, at once ouy two good bred calves, put these along with her _ own, and let her bring all three up, which nearly any cow will do, as a much smaller supply of new milk does for calves compared with the old milk and linseed, &c. I have upon this farm now five threes, and all doing wonderfully well; and I can see they will soon pass both in size and appearance four I had weaned with the pail, although the latter are two months older. There is no doubt in the present day a breeding farm feels the least of the hard times a farmer has now to contend with. I entirely agree with your correspondent when he adds he buys the best shorthorn calves ho can get, as no other breed, in my opinion, can surpass them, when we take into consideration at how much less cost a good shorthorn will fatten compared with anything else.
