Baeby O'Neii. —Mr Barry O'Neil, the celebrated Australian comique has recently arrived in Christchurch from Wellington fcaving lately made the tour of the Australian colonies. It is probable that Mr O'Neil will give a series of his special entertainments during his stay in this city, and, from his veil-known abilities, it is certain that he will neet a krge share of the publio patronage. Lyttbiton Maqistbatb'S Cotjet.—Edward Jackson, on remand for larceny of 10a from Riohard McDonald, was this morning d:9chargod by Mr Joseph Beswick, R M., the evidence being insufficient to establish felonious intent; E. Belph, for jumping on a passenger train whilst in motion, was fined 2Gs; and a civil case, Djybon v. Ammon, ckim £2 13s 9d, was given in favour of the plaintiff for £2 3s 9d and costs. Nobth Oantebbitby Racks. —The settling for these races takes place on Tuesday next, at Roberts' Olub Hotel, Rangiora. Sam of Blood Stock. —The important sale of the Middle Park stock will take place to-morrow, and will, no doubt, attraot a large muster of sporting men. Philosophical Institute. —A meeting of the members of the above will be held tomorrow evening, when Mr A. D. Dobson will read a paper. The Eastbb Review.—Some idea of the demand made upon the carrying resources of the Canterbury Railways may be gathered from the fact that on Easter Monday 10,000 persons were carried to the Racecourse. Abbest.—A man named Webb, lately in the employ of the New Zealand' Insurance Company in the office at Nelson, was arreßted yesterday at Lyttelton on a charge of embezzlement. He was a passenger to Lyttelton in the b.b. Maori yesterday morning, and last night was locked up in the police station here pending a remand to Nelson.

Sebviob of Sono.—A service of song waß given last night in the Baptist Church, Oxford terrace. The subject was "The Voyage of Life," the reader, Bev. C. Dallaston, drawing an analogy between the salient events of a voyage by sea and the current of a Christian's moral life. The musical portion of the service was rendered by an efficient choir, under the leadership of Mr H. Oorrick.

Thbatbb Boyal.—"The Happy Land" and "The Pilot" drew a very large attendance last night. This evening " The Serious Family" occupies the first place in the bill, the performance terminating with, for the last time, " The Pilot." To-morrow evening " One o'clock, or the Knight and the Wood Demon," for which extraordinary preparations are being made, will be produced for the first time. Oabandini Concebts.—The Oddfellows' Hall was well attended last night, the same programme being repeated as on the previous night. The various numbers were most artistically rendered by the respective members of the company, and the audience testified their appreciation of the musical treat provided by frequently applauding.

Educational Confbbencb. —The conference of chairmen of school committees, which is fixed for Tuesday next in the East_ Christchurch schoolroom, is exoiting a considerable amount of interest. The principal object for which the meeting has been convened is the discussion of certain amendments which it is proposed to endeavor to introduce in the next session of Parliament in the Education Act. The majority of the chairmen in the district have promised to attend, and fluoh members of committee as feel inclined to take part in the discussion are invited to be present.

Cbickbt. —The return match between the Springfield and Whitecliffs teams was played at Whitecliffs on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Springfield by five wickets, Whitecliffs team making 26 and 33 for the two innings. Springfield made 38, and 46 in the second innings, with five wickets to fall. Banks and Smith's bowling for the Springfield olub waß quite unplayable, whilst Hunt for the Whitecliffs team took five wickets in the second innings. Farquhar was the principal scorer for the visitors, making 9 and 13 for first and second innings respectively.

Pbojbcted Jbtty at Kyle.—To obviate the necessity for bringing their grain to Eakaia to be sent from there by railway to Lyttelton, it is the intention of the residents in the Kyle district "to construct a small jotty. This will be about a chain in length, and will be built on iron pipes, with a moveable deck ffnd tramway, so that small crafts or steamers may come alongside. If the project turns out a success it will be very convenient, as the vessels will bring cargoes of timber and fencing material from Banks' Peninsula, whioh is not more than forty miles from the proposed jetty.

Machstate's Cotjbt, Lyttelton.—Edwd. Jackson, a stranger f'om the Kaikouras, was yesterday charged before Mr J. T. Eouse at this Court with the larceny of half a sovereign from Bichard Macdonald, Tho theft was alleged to have been perpetrated at the Mitre Hotel. The accused .-as remanded until today.

Depaktube of thb Voltjntebes. The majority of the volunteers belonging to other parts of the colony have returned to their homos. The Nelson and Wellington men left yesterday by tho Hinemoa and Stella, and a special train left at ninq o'clock last evening, taking tho majority of the southern volunteers, but a number who had obtained lpave remainod behind with the objeot of extending their holiday, and returning leisurely during the week. Stbkbt Tbamway.—A contract has been let to Messrs Oats and Co. for the extension of the tramway to Papanui, and work will be be commenced in the course of a few days. The company have also accepted a tender for the completion of the central station, and it is intended to extend the line as soon as possible to Addington, Sydenham, and the Ferry road. It may be stated that the tramway was largely patronised during the holidays, and on Monday over 3300 people travelled on it, and yesterday about 2000 tickets were issued.

Heathcoib Pabish Bazaab.—This Bazaar opened again yesterday, in Messrs. Ford and Newton's Booms, Cashel-street, and during the afternoon and evening a greater number of people attended than on the previous day. The result of the hard work of those lidies and gentlemen who had charge of tho stalls was the handsome Bum of about £6O for the day's takings. The large quantity of goods still on hand will be much reduced in price to-day ; and the balance left at 8 p.m. will bo Bold by auction.

Juvenile FOKE3TEY.—The Juvenile Court Star of Canterbury, A.0.F., the membership of which now numbers 120, held its ordinary meeting at the hall, Oxford terrace, last evening. A competition of recitations, sentimental and comic songs, was held for three prizD hooks given by Bro. S. Bath. Bros W. Robb, E. Morton, and R. Stapleton were the successful competitors. Bro. R. C. Bishop announced his intention of giving three books for a similar purpose. Yotes of thanks were passed to the donors of the prizes, and the court adjourned.

Academy op Mtraic.—" The Blue Ribbon of the Turf," a piece singularly apropos to the present period, was produced last eTening at the Academy of Music by the Arethusa Star Company. Messrs Walter Hill, Miss Jennie Nye, Meßsrs Burford, Clinton, Hooper and the other members of the Company wore exceedingly successful in their effortß to render the ultimate triumph of virtue over vice complete, which took place in due course at the end of the drama. A local piece, " Christchurch in 1866," is announced for production shortly. To-night " The Two Orphans " will be played.
