NEWS OF THE DAY.
Scavenging Rath.—Repeated notices as to the necessity of paying their rates on this head having had no effect on a very large number of the citizens, so far, that is, as inducing them to meet the liability, it has been determined to proceed against ail defaulters. A large batch of summonses have already been made out, and the two inspectors will at once proceed to serve them.
Thbateb Eotau.— “ The Pilot” and “Robert Maoaire " still keep possession of the boards, and will be repeated this evening. Kaiatox Maqisthatbs’ OotTßT.—On Wednesday, before His Honor Judge Symonds, P. Crawley, an old offender, was fined 5s for being drunk and disorderly. SrOETING. —Owners of horses engaged in the Free Handicap are reminded that the acceptances close this evening at the O.J. rooms.
Hbathcotk Regatta. —This regatta took place yesterday, and was fairly patronised by the public. Some very good races took place, and from an aquatic point of view it was a success.
Kaiapoi Regatta. —Messrs B. Petersen and 00., in addition to the prize! given by the committee, have given a silver cup to be rowed for in the senior double sculling race at the forthcoming regatta.
Shooting Season.—As a number of people are not very clear as to- when the shooting season for native game commences, it may be well to state that by proclamation in the “ Gazette ” the season commences on the 29th inst.
Academy of Music. This place of amusement will be opened on Saturday night by the Arethusa Star Dramatic Company, with. Dion Boucicault’s celebrated drama “Formosa.” Mr J. S. Willis, the wellknown scenic artist, has arrived, and is engaged painting new scenery, to give effect to the drama.
Engineer Cadets.—The Engineer Cadets mustered last evening at the Drillshed, when a silver medal, won this season, was presented to Color-Sergeant Fulton. The Cadets will meet to make final arrangements at seven o’clock this evening, and on Friday morning they will muster at the Drillshed at 7.30, to proceed to Waimate by the 8.40 a.m. express. Melville House School.—On Tuesday last the boys of this school had an excursion to Port Levy, whither they proceeded by the steamer Akaroa, which they had engaged for the day. The school sports were also held, and the weather being very fine everything passed off most successfully. The Danina.—The quarterly summoned meeting of the Oak of Sydenham Lodge was held at their Lodge Boom, St. Saviour’s schoolroom, last evening. There was a good attendance, including visitors from other lodges. There was a long discussion re benevolent fund in connection with the order, which resulted in the establishment of such a fund being agreed to. Pour members were proposed for initiation. After some routine business the lodge closed in due form. Ohbistchubch Football Club. The annual fgeneral meeting of the Christchurch Football Club was held at the Commercial Hotel yesterday evening. There was a good attendance of members, Mr Milton being elected to the chair. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year. President, Mr E. J. S. Harman ; captain, Mr W. Y. Million; deputy-captain, Mr M. Lewin; treasurer, Mr T. W, Stringer; secretary, Mr M. Lewin. Messrs J. B. Evans, E. Ootterell, and J. S. Field were appointed a committee, and Messrs T. W. Stringer and J. B. B - ans were elected delegates to the Eugby Union. There was no other special business, and after dealing with some matters of routine, the meeting adjourned.
Induction of Set. H. B. Buhnett. — The Presbytery of Ohriatchuroh met at Halkett on Tuesday, 23rd instant, at twelve o’clock, for the purpose of inducting the Bev. H. B. Burnett to the pastoral charge of the congregations of Kimberley, Halkett, and Weodons. The sederunt consisted of Revs. Fraser, Beattie, Westbrook, Cairns, Blake, and rlauxwell (clerk pro tern). The Presbytery having been constituted by the Moderator, the proceedings of the day were commenced by the Rev. H. B. Westbrook preaching from Phil. iii. 8. The Rev. O. Fraser then put to Mr Burnett the usual questions, and offered up the induction prayer, after which he suitably addressed the newly inducted minister, and the Bev. Beattie addressed the congregation. The service of the day having been concluded, a very cordial welcome was given to Mr Burnett by the members of the congregation. Members of Presbytery and some friends were afterwards entertained by the committee, and after the lunch sentiments suitable to the occasion were spoken to by several of the gentlemen presort. Masonic. —The monthly meeting of the Canw terbnry Lodge, 1018, E.C., will be held tomorrow evening. Calcutta Sweeps. —Calcutta sweeps on the principal events of the Autumn Meeting will be drawn at J. L Fleming’s auction rooms this, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings.
Citt Council.—' Tha City Council offices wi’l ba closed from Good Friday until tha following Tuesday inclusive. Good Friday.—A Holiness Conferencee, tea and public meeting will take place in the Colombo road Wesleyan Church on the evening of Good Friday. H.A.C.B. Society.— A summoned meeting of the above Society, Christchurch Branch, No. 82, is convened for the evening of Thursday, April Ist. Bible _ Christian Church. —The annual meeting in connection with this Church will take place on Good Friday. A tea and public meeting will be subsequently held. Easter Holidays. —lt is notified at the Custom-house that the Christchurch office will be closed on Saturday next, but the office at Lyttelton will be open for the despatch of shipping business. Cricket. —The Association match for Saturday next and April 3rd will be New Zealand v World. The following are the respective sides : Now Zealand—Messrs Allen, Atick, Cohen, Beard, W. Cotterill, W. J. Cotterill, Fairhurst, J. Fowler, C. Frith, Harman, Milton, H. H. Mathias, and G. A. Turner World—Alpe Ashby, Corfe, Douglas, Evans, Fawcett, Fuller. M‘Donald, Morice, Milner, Sheath, and Watson, Play will commence at 2 p.m. sharp. The following members of the C.C.C. will play Courtenay on the ground of the former on Saturday next, commencing at 10 o’clock punctually : Messrs Ansor, Booth, Caygill, Fisher, J. Lusk, Wheatley, Turner, Washer, Alf. Marshall, Mayne, and Arthur Johnson. Emergencies: Collier and Taylor.
