[By Tedboeaph.] [Per s.s. Wakatipu via Wellington. J VICTORIA, The Liberal Reform League has published an appeal to its supporters for funds to reorganise and consolidate the party. It is understood that the Government intend to disband the garrison of artillery, and employ the saving in strengthening the volunteer organisation. The position of the “ Black Wednesday ” victims will be determined on Thursday, NEW SOUTH WALES. In the Assembly, Mr Fitzpatrick urged desirability of the Electoral Bill being proceeded with as early as practicable, in order to insure that the next general election should take place under the Bill. Sir H. Farkes undertook to consider immediately when the Government could fix a day for the second reading, but thought that the Bill should be the last important measure dealt with by the present Parliament. At Xithgow a larrikin was sentenced to two months for assaulting a Ohinaman. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. A capsized boat and the bodies of Captains Mclntosh and Jasper, of the schooners Lillie and Windward, were found on the beach at Port McDonnell. It is supposed that the boat capsized in the breakers in attempting to land. The match Australian Eleven v Adelaide Sixteen was won by the latter by 304 to 235, QUEENSLAND. The Government have arranged to keep the Court at the Sydney Exhibition open till the end of March. The Government are about to offer £IOOO reward for the best preservative against rust in wheat, to stand a three years’ test. Talandely station at Baroo, with 5000 cattle, has been sold at £5 per head, to Messrs McDonald, Smith and Company, of Sydney. LATE CABLE NEWS. [BY TEDEaBAPH. WELLINGTON, March 23. The following items of nows appear in the Melbourne papers brought by the Wakatipu. LONDON, March 11. Sir Stafford Northcote has delivered an address, in which he emphatically proclaims the resolve of the Imperial Government to strengthen and defend the colonial empire. The Marquis of Hartington has also delivered an address, in which he traverses the entire Government policy. He denies, as the Earl of Beaconsfield hints at, the existence of a party who desire to enfeeble the colonies by a policy of decomposition. If the colonies are now more willing to undertake the burthens of the empire, it is due to the guidance of Liberal statesmen. The colonies lave learnt entire dependence upon Imperial assistance for protection and defence, and this he contends is not compatible with their
dignity or freedom. The Government in the coming election expect a majority of twenty or thirty. The rumours of the collapse of the grain ring are false. Lady Charlotte Bacon is dead. March 13. Mr Gladstone has made a speech in the House of Commons in support of a resolution by Professor Fawcett affirming that it is unjust to throw upon India the expense of the Afghan war.
A meeting, attended by over 20,000 persons, has been held in Dublin, at which resolutions were passed and speeches were made denouncing the landlords and demanding a reduction of rents. The Persian Commission has arrived at Herat with a view of laying the basis of the permanent occupation by Persia. The Commission has been welcomed by the Afghans.
