LOSS OF THE SAXON AT KATAPOI.
On Saturday forenoon the schooner Saxon, Captain McKenzie, from Grahamstown, laden with a cargo of 50,000 ft. of sawn timber, while entering the Waimakariri Biver, went ashore on the North spit. The vessel was being hold to the northward, and the wind dying away as a heavy shower of rain came on she drifted aground. The channel over the bar is at present divided, and the depth of water less than usual, so that the width of deep water was necessarily restricted. The accident must be assigned to these causes. The cargo, consigned to Mr John Sims, is fully insured, and the vessel is also said to be insured. On Sunday morning the Saxon was got off, but was unfortunate enough to take the ground on the South side. Our Kaiapoi correspondent telegraphed last night that the vessel had been abandoned during the afternoon as a total wreck, The captain of the Saxon remained at the pilot station, and it is understood that an inquiry into the wreck and the working of tho signals at the bar will bo asked for.
