PEDESTRIANISM.
Wo take the following fuller particulars of young Scott's performance in Wellington from a' local paper:—Young Scott, who started on his twenty-four hours' walk agiinst time on Eriday night, drew a large number of visitors on Saturday afternoon and evening. The pace of nearly six miles an hour, ut which be walked during the first four hourg, created a general impression that be would su died in covering the 112 miles, especially as he seemed to be in excellent trim. At 3.30 a.m. on Saturday he took a rest of about five minutes, aftar which he went off agiin at about five and a half miles an ht-ur, from which he slackened off gradually, so that when ho stoppod for breakfast at S a.m. his average was not abovo five ru ; l■ ■■>. During tho day he took matters pretty easy. In the evening, when there was a large attendance, he freshened up again, and once m.-re increased his pace to five miles an hour. By eight o'clock he had covered one hundred miles, so that he required to do twelve miles in two hours in order to complete his task, which it became evident he would not do. He did not appear at all fatigued, yot as he did not increase his pace it was taken for grauted that the remaining distance would prove a little too much for him. The 109th mile was covered in a little less than ten minutes, and as it only wanted three minutes to ten o'clock, he stopped when the bell rang. He was loudly cheered, and there was some difficulty in preventing the crowd from carrying him on their shoulders. On the last occasion the distance covered was 108 miles, go that Scott has succeedod in bettering himself by one mile. Those who know what it is to bo up for twenty-four hours, even without walking, will be able to form a good idea of tho magnitude of the undertaking.
