NEWS OF THE DAY.
Thb Unemployed.—This morning a num. ber of the unemployed were supplied with tickets to go to Waikari, where they will be supplied with temporary work until the arrival of Mr Austin, who is at present absent in Dunedin, for the purpose of arranging a uniform ecale of wages for the men throughout the colony. Colombo Road Weslbyait Cht/boh.— The Her. J. S. Smalley will corducfc services to-morrow morning and evening. " The Tay bridge disaster" will form the subject of the evening's discourse. _ Ohibopodibt.—As will be seen by advertisement in another column Mr BMSstian, corn doctor, is at present stopping inOhriatchurch, and may bo consulted at the White Hart Hotel, or people leaving their address at Mr Ellisdon's, chemist, can be attended at their own houses. Mr Basstian has received the most flattering testimonials from numerous sufferers on whom ho has operated in Christchurch and the neighborhood. There is no cutting used in Mr Basstian's process. Lyttblton Polios Cor/BT.—Robert Williamson, for refusing duty on board the Star of India, was remanded until Monday.
Thk Tramway.—lt is understood that before the tram cars ro-commenoe running regularly, the entire line will be carefully gone over to ensure perfect accuracy in the levels, the recent heavy rain and the road roller combined having caused a depression in some [places, to which is attributable the running off the rails of the engine and cars. Diocesan Sunday School Association. —The usual monthly meeting of the members of this association will be held in St. Luke's Schoolroom next Thursday evening, at 7.30, when the Rev. Q-. J. Caolmondeley will deliver a lecture on " The Characteristics oE Hebrew Poetry." SroßTiNct.—Mr Absolum has purchased at a high figure the cross-country horse Major.
Libel Case.—The action of Mr Thomas Bracken against Mr George Darrell, for libel, will be tried at the civil sittings on April 12th, at Christchuroh, by special jury. Thb Public Libbabt.—The catalogue in connection with the circulating department of the Public Library has been issued from the press. The books are creditably got up, the different departments of literature being carefully selected and properly classified. Skating. Professor Taylor and Lillie, who it will be remembered gave a series of skating performances very successfully here some time ago, open on Monday evening, at the Oddfellows' Hall. During the entertainment Professor Taylor will introduce several novelties in the art of skating.
Fieb.—A three -roomed house in Oxford terrace East, owned and occupied by a man named Htenning, was burnt down shortly after two o'clock this morning. Stenning states that the fire originated near the chimney, but the flames spread with such rapidity that he had great difficulty in saving anything, and the brigade, which was on the spot with commendable speed, could do nothing but extinguish the ashes. The building was insured for £l6O and the furniture for £4O.
Accident. —A young man named McDermaid was making a short out from the Hotel at Barry's PaBS to the Beach in Barry's Bay on Thursday, along one of the logging tracks leading to Mr Latter's sawmill, when in a steep part of the track he was overtaken by a team of bullocks drawing a log. There being no means of escape the log went over a portion of his body, breaking his leg at the ankle. He was immediately conveyed to Akaroa Hospital, where his injuries were attended to by Dr. Guthrie.
Lkgal.—His Honor Mr Justice Johnston shortly leaves for Dunedin to take the special jury cases, including the Waimate fire cases. His Honor Mr Justice Williams takes the Hokitika circuit. The next sittings here will probably not take place until April Ist. Glee Society.—A meeting of the members of the Christchurch Glee Society will be held at Professor Hughes', Manchester street, this evening at eight o'clock. Thanksgiving Service.— A harvest thanksgiving service will be conducted by the Eev. Mr Elmslie, at St. Paul's Presbyterian Churoh to-morrow morning. Christchurch Cricket Club. An entertainment in aid of the funds of the above club will be given in the Oddfellows' Hall, on the 23rd inst. The! club have secured the services of the Zealandia Minstrels and Battalion Band, and a capital performance is in course of preparation. Muff Cricket Match.—The return match between the Pablieans and Muff Cricket ulub will be played on the cricket ground on Monday next. Wickets will be pitched at eleven o'clock sh-irp, so as to allow the same to be played out.
