CANTERBURY RAM AND EWE FAIR.
The annual Earn and Ewe Fair, under the auspices of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, commenced and finished yesterday. It was intended originally to have extended the fair over two days, devoting the first to the rams, and the second to the ewes, but owing to the limited number of the latter they were inoluded in yesterday's sale. With regard to the quality of the animals submitted, while undoubtedly there were some very superior sheep penned, especially the Lincoln rams of Messrs Menlove and Qrigg, the Hon. Matthew Holmes, and the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, yet it cannot be denied that there were a very large number of animals that had small claims to be regarded as high class sheep. The attendance was not large, and buyers were scarce. The rather limited attendance yesterday would go far to show that the association would act wisely in fixing the date of the fair a few weeks later in the season. The arrangements made by the indefatigable secretary, Mr Murphy, were as usual excellent. The auctioneers were Messrs H. Matson and Co., represented by Mr John Matson, Messrs J. T. Ford and Co., Mr Newton representing the firm, and Messrs B. Wilkin and Co., for whom Mr Tabarb wielded the hammer. Mr W. J. &. Bluett had one lot from the well-known flock of Messrs McLean and Co., of Auckland, whioh, Bowever, failed to find a purchaser. The auction sales, as given below, by no means represented the amount of business done, as many lots were privately disposed of. The total number of ewes entered was 108, on account of Mr John Ferguson and Mr A. Mclntyro, but they were all passed in. A by no means unpleasant, feature of the day's proceedings was the excellent lunoheon provided by Mr Oookson, of the Commercial Hotel, whose only lameiita-" tion was that there were not a greater number of visitors to do justice to the good things he had prepared for them. The following is the list of sales : Sold ur Messrs Slatbon and Co.
