NEWS OF THE DAY.

Opawa School. —The committee of this district have passed a resolution adopting the oompu'soiy clauses of the Education Act. The effect of this is to render parents in the distilot liable to heavy penalties who do not send their children (who may be of the school age laid down by the act) to school at least for one-half of the time in each year during which the school is open.. Tramway. —Owing to some slight alteration necessary to the curves at the south town belt, the oars did not run to-day. The company purpose advertising to-morrow for tenders for the laying of the line to Papanui. Legal. —His Honor Mr Justice Johnston has returned from the North. Long vacation ends to-day, and a Chamber sitting will be held during the week. The Water Supply Scheme. —The City Council have determined to offer Mr Blackwell one hundred guineas should his alternative scheme be adopted by the ratepayers. Ashley School. —As several of the residents at Ashley find fault with the recent action of the committee of this school, a petition is intended to be presented to the chairman, asking him to call a meeting to consider the matter.

Accident at Ranqioba. —On Tuesday a man named Skurr, in the employ of Mr Buddenklau, farmer. Gust, whilst driving a cow along the west town bolt was rushed by the animal and thrown from his horse. One of his legs was severely broken near the ankle. He was attended by Dr. Downes, and subsequently taken to the Hospital. The Lyttelton Magistracy. —The long delayed desire of the Lyttelton residents to have a Magistrate resident at the port seems likely to be realised. It is reported that Mr H. R. Webb’s residence has been taken by Mr Joseph Beswiok, R.M., who will enter upon possession as soon as Mr "Webb removes to Christchurch.

Kangioba Borough By-Laws. —lt is the opinion of many persons who were on Tuesday subjected to the annoyance of hawkers’ carts standing on Victoria street for hours at a time, that the police would confer a boon on persons using the road and driving stock by moving on the carta alluded to from time to time.

Sanitary Matters at Kaiapoi. —After repeated reminders the Borough school committee have carried into effect a drainage scheme for the improvement of the premises. The opening of an old drain on Tuesday morning gave out a pestilential smell, and no wonder that complaints have been made of the school promises. It would have been as well too if the work had been done at any other time than when so many children were about.

Mabbl* Quarry Company. —At the annual general meeting of this eompany last night, the report of the directors and statement of accounts were submitted and adopted. Messrs Charters and Mitchell were elected as directors.

Chbistohubch Chess Club. —Tho annual meeting of this Club was held yesterday evening at the Public Library. Mr A. Ollivier was elected president for tho ensuing year, vice Mr Yeel resigned. A report of the meeting will be found elsewhere. Gbocbbs’ Picnic. —The grocers’ picnic took place yesterday. There was a large gathering of both sexes, between thirty and forty traps starting from tho old Post Office about nine o’clock, en route for Sumner, where the party spent a most enjoyable day. Cite Wobks. —At a meeting of tho works committee of the City Council, held yesterday morning, it was resolved that tho city surveyor should be instructed to call for tenders for sinking an artesian well in Market place ; also, to lay a length of concrete for the convenience of the fish hawkers. The committee further authorised the surveyor to effect temporary repairs to the city side of the South town belt.

Unemployed Meeting. —A meeting of the unemployed was held in Cathedral square yesterday afternoon, when Mr Bennet and another member of the deputation who waited upon Messrs Stevens and Andrews on Saturday last, made a statement as to the promises conveyed by the Government to them through the two city members abovenamed. The effect of that communication appeared in a telegram from the Hon. Mr Oliver, published in yesterday’s issue, Sunntsxdb Abyhtm.—lt has been customary to give the inmates of this institution a treat annually, and last year the public subscribed liberally towards that object, the result being to give the patients of the asylum a very enjoyable holiday. An appeal to the public will be made this year. A committee of gentlemen who have kindly interested themselves in the movement will commence a canvass of the town to-day. The object is of a very deserving character, and tho appeal should meet with a ready response. Cantkbbuey Reqisteation Ofpicbbs.— The following gentlemen have been appointed registrars under the Registration of Electors Act, 1879, for the various electoral districts in Canterbury;—Cheviot, Mr J. Goodall; Aihley and Kaiapoi, Mr G. F. Hewlings ; City of Christchurch, Avon, Heath cote, and Selwyn, Mr G. L. Leo; Coleridge, Mr P. Cox; Lyttelton, Mr W. H. Byes, jun. ; Akaroa, Mr B. T. Missen; Timaru, Mr T. Eowley; Geraldine, Mr G. Dyson; Gladstone, Mr G. Tennant. The hath Rahway Accident. —In reference to the railway accident on Monday evening, the account furnished in yesterday’s issue was inaccurate as to one or two details. The accident occurred at Burnham station, the child who was hurt being on the 4.55 train south. The express going north happened to be standing at the station, and the guard, Ohaa, Heaton, brought the child on to Christchurch, after binding up her wounds, and sub sequently saw her conveyed to the hospital. On enquiry at the hospital last evening, it appeared that the child was doing as well under the circumstances as could be expected, there being no danger of losing her life.
