CANTERBURY CHESS CLUB.

The Canterbury Chess Club held its opening meeting yesterday evening, play commencing at half-past seven o’clock with the match Married v Single. Messrs Tancred (president), Hookham, Moore, and Poez -represented the married men, Messrs Malcolm, Jacobsen, Lund, and Mainwaring the single men. The latter sustained a complete reverse. Mr Hookham declined the Evans gambit, with which Mr Jacobsen started, and gaining a fine attack, carried his game through to a successful issue. Mr Lund led off with the Queen’s gambit, but after a game in which each side alternately had the advantage, was forced to cry peccavi. Mr Peez led off with the King’s knight’s opening, and his opponent becoming very cramped in his game, was shortly annihilated. Mr Tanored led off with the Scotch gambit, and after a long struggle the game, which was the best contested of the evening, was declared drawn. The match thus stood—Married, three won and one drawn.
