It has been announced to-day that Parliament will be dissolved at Easter, that the general elections wi’l take place during April, and a new Parliament vu I l> it is expected, be summoned for the dispatch of business at the beginning of May. Budget Statement. Sir Stafford Northcoto, Chancellor of the Exchequer, will submit the Budget statement to the House of Commons on Thursday next. Consols* The Three per Cent. Consols are at 98, The Markets. The market for Australia wheat is strong. Adelaide brands remain unchanged at 50s, and Queensland at 47s 9d, The tallow market is quiet. Best beef is worth 35s 6d. Best mutton, 375. At the wool sales to-day 8400 bales were offered, making a total of 159,200 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the auction was firm, and there was a good demand for New South Wales fleece wools. Trade Returns-
The Board of Trade returns of imports for the past month amounts to £33,250,000, showing an increase of £4,562,500 compared with last year’s returns. The returns of exports amount to £7,437,500 (?), being an increase of £3,781,250 on last year’s returns for the same month. WASHINGTON, March 9. The Panama Canal. President Hayes, in his message to the Senate, has pointed out that it is necessary that the construction and working of the Panama Canal should bo under the control of the United States. LONDON, March 9 A Manifesto. The Premier (Earl Beaconsfield), has issued a manifesto addressed to the Yicoroy of Ireland (?), in which he invites the opinion of the country on the question of the maintenance of the unity of the British Empire. His Lordship further asks Ireland (?) to express its opinion as to the necessity or otherwise for the predominance of English influence in the Councils of Europe.
