The unfortunate had trudged along us far as the Wheatsheaf Hotel, and, as he wore the Asylum uniform, he was quickly recognised by Mr Dance, the proprietor of the house, who detained him until Constable Black from Governor’s Bay arrived and took charge of him, taking him on to Lyttelton, where one of the warders from the Asylum was met, and Foster turned over to him. Escapes of this sort are more frequently occurring than seems consistent with proper watchfulness. Bank Changes at Lesston.—Mr Edgar Barra nger, who has been acting as agent for the Bank of New Zealand, at Leeston, for the last two 'and a-half years, has been removed to Kaikoura. His departure has been much regretted by all his friends, who had arranged to give him a complimentary dinner before his departure, but owing to the steamer sailing eight hours earlier than was expected, it had to be abandoned. Mr Scott, from Akaroa, takes Mr Barranger’s place. Bam: Faib.—The annual ram fair will be held in the Grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Thursday next, 11th March, and the awe fair on tho following day. The entries are not so numerous as last year, being 1714 rams as against 1967, and 108 ewes as against 286 in 1879. It is, however, expected that the quality will be very superior on tho whole to those brought forward last year. The breeds represented will be Lincolns, Border and English Loioesters, Ootswolds, and Merinos. The sales will commence at ten o’clock sharp. Pbhsentation.—Messrs Sandstein and Co. have in their window a handsome testimonial, in the form of an English silver hunting lever watch and gold albert curb chain, to bo presented to P.C.8., Brother K. The guard chain is very massive and handsome and has a gold medal attached to it, bearing on one side tho emblem of the Order and on the other the initials of the recipient. The testimonial is to be presented on March 11th on behalf of several Courts, as well as the local one, in New Zealand. Inside the case of the watch tho following inscription is engraved :—“ Presented to P.C.8., Bro. B. W. Haslam, M.A., Professor of Classics, delivered his inaugural address. There was a good attendance, Professor Brown in the chair. Professor Haslam’s address was a masterly effort, dealing with tho whole question of education, with special reference to University training. We regret that owing-to its extreme length, and the limited space at our disposal, wo ere unable to publish the address in full.
Thb Tramway. —The cars commenced running this morning, and their progress caused a good deal of curiosity and excitement, a considerable number of people using them. The engine, however, showed a singular leaning towards running off the line at the curves. We presume this slight defect will be remedied as soon as possible, for to a person anxious to catch the train half an hour's detention while the engine is crowbarred on to the line again is, to say the least of it, annoying. Allowances, however, must always be made for first appearances. Chess Club. —The annual general meeting of the Christchurch Chess Club will be held this evening at the Public Library. Sunday School Treat.—The Sunday school treat in connection with the Harewood road Sunday school will take place on Thursday, 11th instant.
