AMERICAN OPINION ON THE ZULU

In tho course of a recent interview General Sherman, commander-in-chief of the United States army, expressed the following opinion on the conduct of the Zulu war ;—“ I think tho war was very well managed. Lord Chelmsford permitted himself to be surprised at Isandula ? —Surprises will always happen. A general is bound to guard against them, but they will happen. Do you think Lord Chelmsford an able commander?—He did his work well enough. England seems to me to make a great mistake in leaving everything to one general. You mean Sir Garnet Wolseley ?—Yea, I do. A nice, able follow. I had him out with me, and like him immensely ; hut England should give a chance to some of the younger men. There are lots of men who would distinguish themselves if they only got a chance.”
