BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education for the district of North Canterbury took place yesterday afternoon, at half-past three o’clock. Present—Messrs John Inglis (chairman), John Saunders, and E. C. J. Stevens, Rev. O. Fraser. A number of appointments which had .been made since the last meeting of the Board were confirmed.

The Chairman reported the election of Messrs H. J. Tanored, Webb, and Cunningham on the Board, to fill the three vacant seats.

Correspondence was read respecting teaching drawing in the Colombo Road School, and tho secretary was instructed to call the attention of the school committee to the Act upon tho matter.

An application was read from Mrs Rowe, asking to be excused from the next examination, on the ground of recent illness. The Board thought that the case might be mot by the appointment being considered a temporary one.

Tho question of the appointment of a master to teach drawing in various schools, was postponed until the next meeting of the Board. A circular letter was read from the Education Department, notifying that tho sum of £7OOO had been allocated to the Board for school buildings, &c, and cautioning the Board as to the advisability of not anticipating any grant or portion thereof. Tenders were read for painting at Kaikoura, and the Board decided to accept the lowest. A report was read of the state of the Woodend school, and Mr Lambert’s estimate of the cost of altering it. The matter was held over. The remainder of the business was transacted in committee, after which the Board adjourned.
