NEWS OF THE DAY.
Heathcote Regatta.— At a meeting last night of those interested in holding a regatta on the estuary, it was decided that it should take place on the 24th instant. Rangioea Flower Show. —The autumn show of the Eangiora Horticultural Society takes place to-day in the hall of the Literary Institute. A capital show of fruit and vegetables is anticipated. University Senate. At yesterday’s meeting of the Senate, H. J, Tancred, Esq., and Dr. Hector were elected to the offices of Chancellor and Vice-chancellor respectively. The session of the Senate will terminate today. Accident. —A man named Roberts, working in a truck at Methven loading grain, had his foot severely squeezed between the bags and the side of the truck on Tuesday evening. Ho was brought to Eakaia, and from there taken on to Christchurch by the 7 a.m. train on Wednesday.
Entertainment. A musical entertainment, interspersed with recitations, was given on Tuesday evening, in the Foresters’ Hall, by Messrs Jones and Richardson, concluding with a representation of Punch and Judy for the benefit of the juveniles. The entertainment gave much satisfaction, and will be repeated on Saturday afternoon and evening in the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton.
The Immigrants on Ripa Island.— Upon the officials visiting the quarantined immigrants yesterday, it was repotted that a fresh case of scarlatina had shown itself in the married people’s quarters. This will necessitate a longer detention of the immigrants in that particular quarter, but the single women, all of whom have enjoyed first-rate health since landing, will be released next Monday. Oxford Assessment Court. —At this Court on Wednesday, before O. Whitefoord, Esq., Judge, an objection was raised that the roll had not been open for inspection as advertised at East Oxford. Some of the properties were found also to have been improperly and insufficiently described. The Judge said he would appoint a valuer according to the Act to make a new roll, as that before him was incomplete. North Canterbury Races. —A meeting of stewards and others interested was held at Roberts’ Junction Hotel, Rangiora, on Tuesday evening, to discuss the question of postponing the races over Easter Monday, in consequence of the Yolunteer review, Captain Parsons, president of the N.0.J.0., in the chair. After some discussion, it was decided by nine votes to five that the races be held as advertised. The meeting then considered some minor matters, and adjourned.
South Rakaia School Committee.-— The above committee held its ordinary monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs 0. Tucker (chairman), J. N. Sharp, W. Hartnell, and W. Cox. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education, informing the committee that the Government have reserved the block of five acres on which the present school buildings are situated as a school site. The resignation of Miss Jack, who has been appointed to the West Christchurch School, was read and accepted. The chairman said he had advertised for an assistant mistress, but had received no applications. It was resolved to extend the time and hold a special meeting on March 16th to receive applications. John Halo was recommended for the appointment of pupjl teacher, subject to his passing the fifth standard. It was decided to close the school during the time of examination for teachers’ certificates, to allow the master to attend the examination. Kaiapoi Board op Health. —At the meeting of the above Board on Tuesday, Dr. Ovenden was appointed health officer at a salary of £3O per annum. A considerable amount of business was transacted, in addition to which the Board decided to request the health officer to report upon the sanitary state of the school. North Waimakabiri Embanimbnt. —At the last meeting of the Eyreton Road Board it was decided that the embankment at Driscoll’s corner, Eyreton, referred to in Messrs Dobson and Son’s report as necessary to prevent the overflow of the North branch of the Waimakariri, in the direction of Eyreton and Ohoka, be erected as soon as practicable.
Theatre Koyaxi. —The very successful play of “The Two Orphans” will be produced this evening for the last time. To-morrow the popular drama of “ The Octoroon, or Life in Louisiana,” will be given. Cricket. The Richmond will play the AvonviUe on Saturday next, on the ground of the latter. Play to commence at 2 p.m. The following membe-a will represent the Sydenham C.G. in their match with the Sunnyeide C.C. on Saturday next, at 2.30 p.m.:—Messrs Easton, Willett, Chambers, Hebden, Day, P. H. Espenett, Joynt, Keuvig, E. S. Hall,' Bound, and Matson; emergencies, E. Pavitt and Beare. A conveyance will leave the Show Ground corner at 1.45 p.m. sharp for Sunnyside.
H.A.C.B. Society. —The quarterly meeting of this society will be held to-morrow evening at half-past seven o’clock.
Picnic. —The auctioneers of Christchurch have combined with the cattle and sheep dealers, drovers, &c., to have a picnic to-morrow. They will leave Tattersall's at half-past eight o’clock, their destination being Sumner, Walxin* Match. The match between Penticost and Swan will commence to-morrow evening at 10 o’clock, in the Oddfellows’ Hall.
