SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last evening. Present His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Andrew, White, Charters, Joyce, Langdown, Nioholl, Pavitt, Shierlaw. After the usual preliminary business, the town clerk read the correspondence since last meeting. Among the communications received were letters from the local representatives in reference to the removal of the Commissioner of Railways. On the motion of Cr. Joyce, it was resolved—“ That letters be written to Messrs. Kichardson, Stevens, Fisher, and Andrews, thanking them for the attention they have given to the matter re removal of Mr Conyers, and requesting them to renew their efforts in order to retain the staffs of the accountant, cashier, and store department, whose removal for the present has been countermanded.” Prom William Quinn and others, drawing attention to defective drainage on the Gasworks road between Second and Third streets.
A letter from the Drainage Board was also read in reference to the drainage of the Gasworks road, saying it was in the hands of the chairman of that Board and the engineer. The petition was referred to the works committee, with power to act. Or Charters then moved—“ That the letter of the Drainage Board be referred to the works committee, with power to make a claim on the Drainage Board for not less than £2 a chain.”
Seconded by Cr. Joyce, and carried. Several other letters of no general interest were read and disposed of. The report of the works committee was read as follows ;
Your committee recommend that the Drainage Board’s letter re Jackson’s Creek be replied to, stating that the Council approve of the proposed filling up of the creek so soon as the drainage shall have been otherwise provided for, and that the Council are willing to leave the examination of the same to the Board’s surveyor. Per mission having been given by Mr T. Pepperill and Mr J. Williamson to lay a pipe drain through their properties for the drainage of Matson street, wa have instructed the foreman of works to proceed with the work at once. We have instructed the foreman of works to proceed with the formation of Pallsgrove and Stevens streets by day labor, the system of letting the work by contract having proved very unsatisfactory. The committee beg to call upon the finance committee for a settlement of the amount promised in aid of the widening of Waltham road, as that road now wants making np. We have forwarded the two sketch plans prepared by Messrs Dobson and Son for Wils m’s bridge to the Heathcote Koad Board for their consideration, and as a precautionary measure, have placed notices on the present bridge stating that it is unsafe for heavy traffic. The report was adopted. The report of the finance committee was next read. The receipts for the fortnight amounted to £B7 15s 6d, and bills passed for payment, £B3 5s lOd j credit balance in the Bank, £I3BO Is Id. The report was adopted, and a resolution passed that £4O bo paid on account for the valuation of the borough. With regard to the question of a post and telegraph office for Sydenham, a letter was received from the Government to the effect that the matter was receiving due consideration, and the purchase of a site for the erection of such a building was being effected. A deputation was received re “ excessive rate charged for the formation of roads and footpaths in Clarkson’s paddock.” The matter was referred to the works committee, to report at next meeting of the Council.
Or. Andrew moved—“ That in the opinion of the Council the joint committees appointed to bring up a report on the advisability of negotiating a loan be requested to meet and report to the next meeting of the Council.” Seconded by Cr. Joyce, and carried. Or. Joyce moved letter be sent to the Drainage Board informing the members thereof that the Council is of opinion that the cheapest and best mode of draining the greater part of Sydenham is by constructing a sewer in the bed of Jackson’s Creek, and the outflow therefrom to enter the sewer now laid in the Gasworks road.” Seconded by Or. Charters and carried. “ That the hen. the Colonial Secretary be written to respectfully requesting him to advise His Excellency the Governor of New Zealand to declare all the area within the boundaries of the Borough of Sydenham aa
the Sydenham district, for the purposes of public vaccination, pursuant to the Public Health Act, 1875.” Cr. Charters seconded the resolution, which was carried. The Council then adjourned.
