A man named Brown, a laborer employed on the Corporation works at Newtown, was killed this morning by a fall of earth. DUNEDIN, February 28. The Two Robinsons. The G-overnor intimates in the papers that he is not in any way interested in any of the Hon. W. Robinson's horses. Probably he will form a atud. He has bought one horse in the North, but has n«t taken delivery. If he goes in for raoing he will not be in partnership with anyone.

A telegram in the " Times " says an important discovery has been made at Oandrona. The stone is supposed to contain gold. AUCKLAND, February 27. Bovis Corpses VileMessrs T. and S. Morrin had the carcase of an animal supposed to be infested with pleuro, sent to their yards in High street to-day, from the neighborhood of Ellerglie. It was examined by Drs Goldsboro and Haines, and others. Their reports will be sent to the Attorney- General. An Ex-Colonist's Present. Mr McKelvie, an old Auckland colonist, has sent to Auckland Museum, by the Loch Urr, from London, a collection of Maori curiosities, which had been in England for more than thirty years, also a large collection, of silver and copper coins, and twenty curious medals. The Pleuro Scare. At a meeting of the Pastoral Association a resolution was passed requesting the Government to trace out and purchase the cattle recently imported from Australia, in order todestroy them, and thus stamp out disease, at a cost of £SOO. Mr Buckland, in the event of this being done, offered to furnish a lsst of purchasers and prices given when sold at his. yards. The Government are urged to quarantine the cattle expected by the Hero from Sydney, also those expected shortly from. Queensland. Morris Proceeds. The " Timaru Herald" having refused to apologise for the statement made respecting the condition of the barque Glimpse, Captain Morris has determined to proceed with the action for libel. A Long SwimA man named Proude, who left in a boat for Kohimarama yesterday, was picked up in the harbor yesterday afternoon. The boat had capsized off the North. Head, and he had been swimming an hour and a half before he was rescued. WELLINGTON, February 27. Bailway Extension. A petition is in course of signature calling on the Mayor to convene a meeting for the purpose of urging the necessity of pushing on the Wellington-Foxton railway. Employing the "Unemployed. Nelson Rifle MeetingMembers about to take part in the Bine Association meeting are arriving here rapidly. In the last match between the Greymouth Bangers and the Westland Rifles the former made 673. This is believed to be the highest score yet made in the colony. OAMABU, February 27. SuicideA man named James Geving committed suicide to-day by drowning himself in a creek at Ngapara. He had lately come out of a lunatic asylum. No inquest will be held. TIMABU, February 27. Fraudulent Bankruptcy. Duncan Oruickshank was yesterday committed for trial at Waimate for fraudulent bankruptcy, making the third case of the kind for hearing at the District Court at Timaru on Monday. There are thirteen other criminal cases on the list, including nine riot cases. DUNEDIN, February 27. Silver at Cardrona. A quartz reef carrying silver in considerable quantities, has been discovered on the main Cardrona range. Samples of the ore will be sent to Dunedin for assay. Native Land Purchase Commission. The Native Land Purchase Commission sat again at Waikouaiti to-day, and adjourned till Monday. One More Unfortunate. Ann Ward, a servant at Fidler's Auld Scotland Hotel, where she had been only for a week, gave birth to a child on Wednesday, which was afterwards found dead in a closet. The girl was taken to the hospital. The body of the child was removed to the morgue, where it awaits the usual inquest. ■ The War BumoursHis Excellency the Governor has not received any intimation concerning the probability of war between England and Russia, referred to in Bsuter's Sydney message today. BALCLUTHA, February 27. Balclutha Bridge. At a meeting of the Clutha Council to-day John Watson's tender to erect the Balclutha bridge for £10,953 was accepted, the Council giving the Bank security for the indent of iron in England.
