TAURANGA, February 27. Arrest of a Government OfficialJ. C. Young, late G-overnment Land Purchase Agent, was arreßted yesterday on three informations for feloniously stealing moneys paid to him. as Land Purchase Agent. The amounts are £sl, £7, and £lO. Bail was accepted, himself in £IOOO, and two sureties in £SOO oach. The case will bo heard tomorrow. Obituary. NAPIER, February 27. George Burton, J. P., and Chairman of Wairoa County Council, died this morning, aged 36, of serous apoplexy. Deceased was nephew of the late Dr. Purdy, and arrived in Otago in 1853, where he commenced colonial life as a surveyor. GRAHAMBTOWN, February 27. Claims Against the Government. J. C. Firth, miller, of Auckland, owns 100,000 acres, Upper Thames, and now prefers a claim against the Government for £7452, cost of improving the navigation of the Upper Thames River. Reinforcements for Te Whiti. It is said that some Ngatihako Natives, concerned in the late attack on surveyors, have joined Te Whiti's followers. HAWERA, February 27 Operations at WaimateThe Constabulary are steadily working at the formation of the road, and are about one mile from Kaupokonui. A picket of ten men is constantly stationed at Kaupokonui Bridge, as it seems that in case of hostilities the enemy might seize the bridge and render direct communication with Hawera difficult. An earthwork protection is also being thrown up at the camp. DUNEDIN, February 27. Sweep Intelligence. In Abraham's sweep the first money goes to Treford of Alexandra, the second to Mackane of Port Chalmers, the third to Paterson of the Ootagon Hotel. In Dodson's sweep the first prize goes to Vallance, the second to three work girls in a local factory, the third to Timaru. In the Press Consultation H. Lyon gets first, Grant and Co., of the steamer Wellington, second, a resident of Napier third. In Cameron's Conaa'tetion the first prize, £IOOO, goes to Olutha, the second to G. Spooner of Dnnedin, the third to Oapt. A. Palmer. Charge against a Boy. At the City Polioe Court John Newton, aged twelve, charged with stealing moneys from Green Island railway station, was remanded. Robert Irving was killed and Hugh McOan seriously injured at Blue Spur. They were larking together as some trucks came up an incline, and got caught by the rope, being dragged round by the winding gear. AUCKLAND, February 26. Auckland HarbourMr Maxwell, of the Public Works office, Auckland, denies that the harbor is silting up through the stoppage of reclamation works. True British Courtesy. Wallis Peltyer, formerly a Frenoh refugee, to-day summoned Bishop, the owner of the Griffin, the schooner which conveyed the Communists from Noumea, for assault. The evidence showed that complainant went aboard to complain to the owner of his detaining his countrymen's luggage, when an altercation occurred, and Bishop pushed complainant over the vessel. The Bench dismissed the case.
The Government and the Communists. In reply to a telegram forwarded by the Mayor, containing a resolution passed by the City Council, deprecating the importation of Communists, his Worship has received the following from Mr OK S. Cooper, Under Secretary :—" In reply to your Worship's message expressing indignation at the action of the French authorities at New Caledonia in sending a vessel with released convicts to New Zealand, Mr Hall directs me to say that the question is engaging the careful attention of the Government, It it Bhould be estaolißhed that the action of the New Caledonian Government has been such as to justify remonstrance on tho part of the Government, the necessary steps will be taken for that purpose." Committal. Sydney Beetham was committed at Hamilton for burglary. A Sympathetic Public The legal expenses of W. H. Binsden, head master Newton East School, incurred in defending the action in the Police Court for whipping a boy for truancy, have been defrayed by public subscription. NAPIER, February 26. Attempted SuicideA woman named Phillips, wife of a laborer at Kopua, who had been drinking heavily, yesterday attempted suicide by cutting her throat. Her husband found her on the bed bleeding profusely when he returned from work. She is alive and is expected to recover. Registration of Electors. The forms of claims to vote supplied to Registrars are an exact copy of the second schedule of the Registration of Electors' Act, and contain no provision for claims under the property qualification. At foot there is a note stating that the nature of qualification must be stated, but there is no space for the statement. Railway ProgressAnother section of railway will soon be open, the line being finished except ballasting. WELLINGTON, February 26. Rifle Contest. The Wellington Naval Brigade fired a match against the Dunedin Naval Brigade to-day, and made 669 This is the largest soore yet made in the colony. A seaman named Harris was top scorer with 76 out of a possible 84. JudicialIt is intimated in the " Gazette" that the Northern judicial district has been assigned to Mr Justice Richmond. AppointmentsMr R. G. Bush is appointed Magistrate for Opotiki and Maketu, and William Gilbert Moore, Magistrate for the district of Raglan. F. J. Walmsley is appointed chief clerk of the Land Tax Department. Richard Schmidt is appointed draughtsman, and H. Inglis, A. L. Haylock, W. A. Styche, and John Shakleton, are appointed cadets in the Survey Department. Revenue ReturnsThe laud revenue of the colony for December quarter was £66,039 9a Bd. The consolidated fund receipts for the halfyear ending 31st December, were £1,306,067 7s Id, with £651,609 from Treasury and deficiency bills and temporary deposits.
