SPORTING- NOTES.
By Sinbad. Though, not favored on this occasion by a visit from any outside owners, the Blenheim meeting appears to have proved a success. The Hurdle race, which opened proceedings, was a walk over for Grey Momm, and then Hero had a pretty comfortable win in the Maiden Plate. Marie Stuart and Bore were the winner’s immediate attendants at the finish. The speedy Sir George had but little difficulty in disposing of Heatherbell, his only opponent in the Sapling Stakes. A field of five saddled up for the event of the day, the Marlborough Cup, and here Mr Redwood scored his first win with the well-bred Norseman. The performance, however, can scarcely be considered as a very hish class one, as the son of Traitor and Waterwitch could only secure a half-length verdict from the moderate Magnolia. On the second day Talent, the Totara colt, whose successful Wellington performance I have recently had occasion to chronicle, carried off the Flying Handicap and Ladies' Purse, winning the former after a grand race with Hero. The latter won the Publicans’ Purse from Foul Play. [N.B.-I compliment the owner of the last-named animal on the originality of his nomenclature.] Clarence, a local horse, defeated Grey Momus end another in the Hurdle Race. Mr Redwood was again successful in the Racing Club Handicap, which he appropriated with the aid of Norseman, Satellite and Magnolia following him home in the order named. Magnolia carried off the Consolation Stake. Balmoral, who will be better remembered here as Parthonopeus, wound up proceedings by winning the Forced Handicap, after a capital race with Sir George. Owing to the majority of sportsmen being absent at the Dunedin and other meetings, I understand that Mr Redwood has elected to defer his sale of thoroughbred stock until about the middle of April. The winnings of the crack three-year-olds of America are calculated in the “ Spirit of the limes." Spendthrift, 22,075d015.; Falsetto, 16,425d015.; Ferida, 15,423d015.; Monitor, 15,3051015. ; and Lord Murphy, 10,800dols.— a total of 80,030d015. So Spendthrift (the journal says) is the largest winner of the year, while Bramble wins more races than any other horse, and Lizzie D. started a greater number of times (34) than any other. Sensation is the only horse of any prominence who has not been defeated during the year, having won eight straight races. Mistake, the fleet son of Waverley and Misfortune, who recently sailed for England, where he cannot fail, barring accidents, to show his heels to England’s best, lowered the two-year-old timo record at one mile, having run that distance in 1.43} at the Louisville fall meeting. Says “Rapier” in the “Sporting and Dramatic News”:—An industrious friend has sent me many sheets of paper covered with long columns of figures descending from £26.376, followed by £23.523 to £554, preceded by £555, and the result of the whole is intended to show that during seventy-seven race meetings, held between March 25th and November 29th, a sum of £395,495 was won on the turf. As this #nits many jumping competitions of various sorts, some of which are worth the winning, I suppose that during the twelve months near upon £450,C03 will have been won in stakes on the turf. I have not made the faintest endeavour to check any of my friend’s conclusions, but ho is, I know, well up to his work, and understands the subject upon which he has entered with such elaborate calculations. The figures are probably near the mark, and will surprise many readers.
