NEWS OF THE DAY.

The DErms. —The usual fortnightly meeting of the Hope of St. Albans Lodge was held last evening at their lodge room, Knightstown. P.A. Bro. Boyce, in the absence of A.D. Bro. Hurst, presided. There was a fair attendance of members. Three members were initiate 1 and others were proposed. After some routine business had been transacted, the lodge closed in due form.

University Senate. —The Senate resumed to-day. The Chancellor took the chair at 10 o’clock. Present—Hon. W. Gisborne, Hon. H. J. Millar, Dr. Hector, Eev. J. O. Andrew, Rev. O. Fraser, Eev. W. Johnstone, Professor Shand, Eev. J. Paterson, Professor Sale, Professor Yon Haast, Eev. D. Bruce, Professor Brown, Eev. W. J. Habeas. Several notices of motion having been given, Mr Fraser moved that the Senate do now adjourn till 10 o’clock on Thursday, the object being to give the special committees an opportunity of transacting the business referred to them and bringing up their reports. Assessment Cottbt. —ThoAssessment Court for the south-east ward of the city sat yesterday under the presidency of Mr G. L. Hellish, Judge. Lyttelton Habboxtb Boabd. —At the meeting of the above Board, held yesterday, the Hon. E Richardson was unanimously reelected chairman for the ensuing year. Univbbbity Senate.— The Senate held a long sitting yesterday, and got through a rather formidable order paper. A long and interesting discussion took place with reference to granting ad eundevi degree, The Wateb Supply Question. —Arrangements will shortly be made by the water supply committee of the City Council to hold a series of meetings, prior to the public meeting of ratepayers, for the purpose of explaining matters connected with the proposed scheme of water supply from the Waimakariri.

Ibish Reliip Fund, Ambeeley—A meeting of the committee was held on Monday night, at the Town Hall. A good many of the committeemen were present, Mr S. Coleman presiding. Mr Williams, in the absence of the secretary, consented to act. Upwards of £SO have been collected by those present, and other returns are expected in shortly. The committee will meet again on the Ist March, Pabtbidoes by the Waimate. —Of the three hundred and fifty partridges shipped by the Waimate for the Acclimatisation Society, 309 died on the voyage. The remainder of the birds are said to have arrived all right.

The Habboe Boabd Loan. —At the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board yesterday an opinion was laid on the table from the solicitor of the Board, together with counsel’s opinion on the same subject, to the effect that the National Bank of New Zealand had acted illegally with regard to the loan. It was resolved to refer the matter to the finance committee to report upon. Tbamway Tbial. —A preliminary trial was made yesterday by the Street Tramway Company, but with rather unsatisfactory results. The first start was made from the station in Cathedral Square with an engine and one car, which traversed the rails easily round the Bank of New Zealand corner on to the straight line. Returning to the station, another car was attached to the first one, but in rounding the curve the cars got off the line. After a delay of a few minutes they were again placed on the track. The mishap was attributed by the engine driver to the quantity of loose road metal which had accumulated about the rails, thereby preventing the wheels of the carriages getting a firm grip. No further trial was made. Theatrical. —Mrs O. F. Searle, an actress who has for some years been favorably known as a popular member of various theatrical companies who ’ have from time to time appeared at the Theatre Royal, was yesterday a passenger to Melbourne by the Rotomahana. Mrs Searle has for the last twelve months been debarred from following her profession by serious illness, which has necessitated change of climate. Theatbe Royal. —The performance last night at the Theatre Royal commenced with the lively little comedy entitled “Checkmate,” in which Mr J. P. Hydes as Sam Winkle, Mr Boothman as Sir Bverton Toffle, Miss Ruth Grey as Charlotte Eusse, and Miss Amy Johns as Martha Bunn, kept the audience in a state of merriment from the rise to the fall of the curtain. The performance concluded with “ The Happy Land.” This piece will be repeated this evening preceded by a comedy.

St. Andrew’s Sabbath School. —An entertainment wifi be given in St. Andrew’s schoolroom to-morrew evening, in aid of the funds of the Sabbath School. The programme will include songs, duets, quartettes, readings, and recitations.

The Railway Band. —The following pro gramme will be gone through by the Railway band in Cathedral square on Thursday evening : —Quick march, “ Primrose Path ” (B. Smith) ; selection, “Valley of the Rosea ” (F. Damian) ; valse, “Myra” (Bledger); quick march, “Little Blue Eyes, Sweet and True” (B. Smith); selection (by permission of Messrs Su l livan and Metzler), “ H.M.S. Pinafore ” (A. Sullivan) ; bolero (by request), “Juanita” (E. Newton); lancers, “ The Village Pet ” (R. Smith); galon. “ To the Rescue ” (B. Newtou); National Anthem. Milkmen’s Picnic. —A start will be made from the Old Post Office at 10 a.m. to-morrow.

Masonic. —The regular monthly meeting of the Corinthian Lodge, No. 463, 1.C.. has been postponed to the fourth Thursday in March. Eifle Association. —An adjourned general meeting of the Canterbury Eifle Association will be held at Cook=on’s Commercial Hotel this evening at eight o’clock. Hiocesan Sunday School Association. —The next general meeting of the members of the Sunday School Association will be held in St. John’s schoolroom next Thursday, the 2oth, at 7.30 p.m., when Mr J. H. Twentyman will deliver a lecture (illustrated), on “ Egypt." The room will be open both to members and the public without charge.

Sabbath School Teachers. —ln reference to the Canterbury Sabbath School Teaobers’ Institute, the Eev. J. Elmelie is announced to deliver an address, to which all parents and teachers are invited. Apiarian Society. —A public meeting of persons interested in bee-keeping will take place to-morrow evening in the Congregational schoolroom, _ Manchester street. The attendance of ladies is requested. Bcilbing and Land Society. —The sixth annual meeting of shareholders in the No. 3 Building and Land Society is announced to take place on Friday, the 27th, at 7.30 p.m. Cricket Fixtures. The Association match will be an eleven of the Association v. Past and Present of Christ’s College. The following will represent the Association: —Messrs Ashby, Beard, Corfe, Dou.slas, C. Frith, Fuller, T. Fowler, Longdeu, Milner, Stevens, Turner, Watson; emergency, A. C. Wilson. The following will represent the Christchurch C.C. against the Woolaton C.C. on Saturday next and following Saturday. The match to be played on the Christchurch [ground, and to commence at 2 p.m. sharp :—Messrs Caygill, Turner, Fisher, Washer, Alex. Marshall, Mayne, Wheatley, Lusk, Thompson, Collier, and J. Lusk, A match will be played on the Association ground this day beweeu the Bakers and Butchers.
