The following is the list of prizes, awarded to New Zealand at the Sydney Exhibition, as published in the Commissioners’ first report. The Committee on Judging and Awards report to the Commissioners that nearly threequarters of the work of judging has been gone through, and should nothing unforseen occur, the whole of the judges’ reports will be handed in to the committee within the next three weeks. judges’ special note. The judges are of opinion that in this class (grain and other cereals) the following colonies excel in their respective cereals, vir. - — Wheat, South Australia ; malting barley and oats. Duncan and Son, Christchurch, seeds. All the seeds of very high quality, the best general exhibit in the court for general farming purposes in New Zealand, On experimenting 18 per cent, failed. Should rank as 2nd.
P. Cunningham and Co., Christchurch — Seeds (4 samples), peas and beans first-class. Of a sample of rye-graea experimented on 12 per cent, failed to germinate. As a whole should rank as 3rd.
B. H. Banks, Christchurch —Seeds ( samples). Fair quality throughout, with th exception of Prussian blue peas, which are inferior to other similar exhibits in the same court. The exhibit, as a whole, should rank as 4th.
Joe Dransfield, Wellington—Grass seed, as grasses the best seed in the court, most suitable for farming and pastoral country. On experimenting with rye-grass, 26 per cent, failed ; exhibit should rank as Ist, Mrs Eyles, Richmond, Nelson—Grass seed, good sample of gross, commended. Charles Haynes, Palmerston, Dunedin— Eye-grass seed only, 2nd. Captain Russell, Karanui, Hawke’s Bay— Rye-grass seed only, 3rd, Note.—The best and most comprehensive exhibit, having due regard to quality, variety, utility, and adaptation to public wants is Dransfield’s, 16 samples of seeds, though worse germination ; Duncan’s 8 samples, comes next, second in germination ; Cunningham’s, although very fine seed, does not compare in variety with these. We would place it third, although having beat results in the germinating tests. HOPS AND MALT, Richard Andrew, Nelson Hops, well grown, fine aromatio flavor, good color and condition, 2nd. Th. Harley, Nelson—Hops, well grown, rich flavor and fine condition, 3rd. J. and W. Witty, Waimea—Hops, good color, fine aroma and condition. Surman and Co., Invercargill—Malt, good quality and color, and fair fermenting power, 3rd. COFFEE AND COFFEE BEANS. David Strang, Invercargill—Ground coffee, fair quality, 3rd. Greig and Co., Dunedin—Coffee, wanting in flavor, 4th. ANIMAL PEODUCTS. M'Donald and Miller, Dunedin—Bacon, best in its class, Ist, Charles Blake and Son, Pioton—Highly desirable on account of quality, condition, and freshness, Ist. Edward Sbeedy, Dunedin—Hams, superior to the rest of the exhibits, 2nd. CONDIMENTS, &0, Trent Brothers, Christchurch Ground pepper, 2nd. David Strong, Invercargill—Ground pepper, 3rd. E. H. Munro, Dunedin, let prize, marble; Canterbury Marble Co., 3rd prize. Oamaru Stone Co., W. Daniel (Southland), Professor J. Yon Haast, Edward MoCaffray (Queenstown), Ist prizes ; J. D. Enys, Canterbury and Otago Slate Co., Port Chalmers Co. 2nd prizes for building stone. Nelson Museum, 2nd prize for paying stone.
