MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Febeuaby 24.
[Before J. E. Parker and O. T. Ick, Esq., J.P.’s.] Dbunk and Disobeeely. Elizabeth Lynch, who has been previously convicted, was fined 10s.
Laecbny.—Peter Thompson was charged with stealing a towel, value Is, from the City Hotel. The case was clearly proved. Accused made a rambling statement to the effect that he bought the towel from a man at Ashburton, but when offered the opportunity of calling him as a witness declined to do so. Sergeant Morice gave accused the character of a thorough loafer, who rarely did any work, and spent his small earnings in drink. Prisoner, who has been previously convicted on several occasions of drunkenness and vagrancy, was sentenced to twenty-one days’ imprisonment with hard labor.
