UNIVERSITY SENATE.

The Senate resumed yesterday at ten o'clock. Present —The Chancellor (Mr H. J. Tancred), Hon. W. Gisborne, Rev. Dr. Stuart, Rev. W. Johnston, Professor Ton Haast, Rev. C. Fraser, Rev, W. J. Habens, Professor Brown, Rev. J. Patterson, Rev. Mr Bruce, and Professor Sale.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Rev. Dr. Stuart moved—" That £lO be voted for the prize essay, and that Professor Brown be appointed examiners for the Bowen Prize Essay." Professor Brown submitted the report of the committee appointed to make up results of the entrance examinations. The report was read as follows : To the Chancellor —

Your committee having carefully considered the reports of the examiners for the entrance examinations and the marks allotted to the various candidates, have to report that the following ten candidates have obtained the highest number of marks in the Junior Scholarship examinations, and recommend that Junior Scholarships be accordingly awarded to them. 1. Joseph Grossman—Christ's College 2. Louis Cohen—Private tuition 3. Janette Grossman—Girls' High School, Christchurch

4. Henry Bache Harvey—Wellington College 5. Peter Alexander Lindsay—High School, Dnnedin

6. Henry Brereton Marriott Watson —Christ's College 7. Henry Thomas Purchaa—Christ's College 8. Bobert Francis Irvine—West Christchurch School.

9. Henry Ctobs—Private tuition 10. William Hughes Field—Wellington College Tour committee have also to report that the following candidates have obtained sufficient marks on the Junior Scholarships and the matriculation papers, to qualify for matriculation. This list is not according to order of merit:—

Mr Bruce moved—" That a cemmittee be appointed to examine the report of the Boyal Commission on higher education now laid on the table, as also the proposed draft Bill, to ascertain how their provisions and recommendations may affect the interest of the University, and to report the opinion of the committee thereon. The committee to consist of the Chancellor, Bev. C. Fraser, Bey. J. Patterson, Bev. W. J. Habens, Bev. W. Johnston, Bev. J. O. Andrew, Professor von Haast, Professor Shand, and the mover, the Chancellor to be chairmanj five to form a quorum." The Senate at this stage went into committee to further consider the Chancellor's report. On resuming an ad interim report was presented, and a committee appointed to enquire into the loss of certain papers. The Senate then adjourned till Monday, at ten o'clock.
