The present series of wool auctions to date show the following increases in prices as compared with the last auctions : —Greasy, lid to 2d; scoured, 2d ; fleece, l^d. February 21. The Duke of Argyle declares that the Afghan policy is deceitful, weak, cowardly, and a stain on the honor and prestige of England. Sailed. The Orient liner Sorata sailed for Melbourne on Saturday. LONDON February 20. The "Wool SalesAt the wool auctions to-day 8800 bales were catalogued. There was a firm and active demand. Afghan Affairs. In the House of Lords an important discussion took place on the Afghanistan question. The Duke of Argyle again attacked the policy of the Government. The Premier replied, defending the course pursued, and stated that Russia sought to embarass England in Asia. The duty of the Government was therefore to secure the gates of India. Until this had been achieved it was impossible to retire from Afghanistan, as anarchy still prevailed in the country. Germany at Melbourne ExhibitionThe German Government are taking an active interest in the preparation of the exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition, and are adopting steps to be adequately represented. The Government have determined to gn»nfc a liberal snbsidy towards that end. CONSTANTINOPLE, February 21.
