UNIVERSITY SENATE.

The Senate resumed at ten o'clock yesterday. Present—The Chancellor, Hon. W. Gisborne, Eov. Dr. Stewart, W. Johnston, O. Fraser, W- J. Habens, Profeasors G. S. Sale, Brown, J. Von Haast, Bev. D. Bruce, Bev. J. Patterson, Hon. W. Bolleston.

The minutes of the previous meeting were duly read and confirmed. Professor Brown moved—" That the Senate adjourn at its rising at one o'clock till the next day at ten o'clock." He explained that this would give the committee appointed to go over the reports of the examiners an opportunity to bring up their report. The motion was seconded by the Eev. O. Fraser, and carried. The Chancellor laid on the table a letter from the Minister of Education, enclosing a despatch from the Agent-General on the subject of the Gilohrist scholarship ; also a communication from the General Medical Council recognising the entrance examination. The Hon. W. Gisborne moved—" That copies of the interim report of the existing Bojal Commission on Higher Education in New Zealand be laid before the Senate, together with the draft of any Bill on the subject proposed by tho Commission and furnished by it to the Government, and that the Chancellor be requested to apply to the Hon. the Minister of Education for copies of those documents, for the use of the members of the Senate." Professor Sale seconded the motion, which was carried. The Senate at this stage went into committee to further consider tho Chancellor's annual report. On resuming, the Chancellor reported progress and asked leave to Bit again. An ad interim fteport was presented, and the following resolutions passed : " That a regulation be framed making the medical scholarships open to graduates of the University of New Zealand, and to undergraduates of not less than two years." __" That in the regulation permitting teachers to come up for the B.A. degree, they be required to give the usual six months' notice." " That in the 11th line of the regulation re entrance examination, words be added providing that candidates not presenting themselves after notice, be considered as failing." "That the attention of the Wellington College authorities be called to the fact that a student of Canterbury College has presented himself for the annual examination at the Wellington College without giving notice to the Ohanoellor, as required by the regulations." " That the whole question of the conduot of examinations and remuneration of examiners, be referred to a committee, consisting of the Chancellor, Professor Von Haast, Eev. Dr. Stuart, Bev. 0. Fraser,' Bev. Wm. Johnston, Professor Sale, and Professor Brown." It wag resolved that the accounts he referred to a committee, consisting of Hon. W. Gisborne, Eev. Mr Bruce, Eov. Mr Patterson, Professor Shand, Professor Brown. The Senate then adjourned till ten o'clock to-day. _____^_____,
