The Union Company’s s.s, Taiaroa, Captain Petersen, arrived yesterday from Wellington, and sailed at 2 p m. for Port Chalmers. The American barque Ada Wiswell is advertised for charter by Messrs Dalgety and Co. The barque Island City, Captain McDonald, arrived yesterday morning, with a cargo of coal from Newcastle, whence she left on Monday, February 2nd, had strong easterly breeze, which moderated, veering from S.E. to E.N.E. till Friday, February 13th; strong N.N.E. gale, which lasted from Saturday morning till Monday night; passed Stewart’s Island, Monday morning; Otago Light, Monday night, with light S.K. wind to Peninsula, thence calms and light variables. Was berthed at the Tunnel wharf. THE S.S. TE ANAU. The Union Steamship Co.’s magnificent new steamer Te Anau arrived yesterday morning from Port Chalmers- and was visited by a great many of Captain Carey’s friends, anxious to welcome him back to New Zealand. Some description of the new steamer, taken from report, Las already been published, and it has only now to be added that immediate inspection fully confirms all that has been said of her. Her passenger accommodation in all is simply snperb, and we regret that the limits of our space preclude the insertion of a detailed account of the very luxurious appointments of the vessel in this respect. Of the shape, the carrying capacity, and power of the Te Anau there is something to be said. She does not possess the lines of the Eotomahana. being altogether a fuller model, and nnlike that steamer she has a straight stem. In length she is 15 feet less than the Eotomahana. and of 1 foot less beam, but the space occupied by her engines and boilers is so much less than in the Eotomahana that these slight differences in measurement are more than counterbalanced, and she is able to carry a few more saloon passengers than that vessel, and quite 300 tons more cargo. As is no doubt inferred from the reduced size of engine space, the Te Anau’s steaming power is not as great as that of the Eotomahana. She is capable of steaming thirteen knots, though, and of keeping that speed up with ease. The_ testimony of those who have travelled in her is that she is a remarkably easy boat at sea, and steams without an uncomfortable degree of vibration Her actual measurements are —Length, 270 ft. €in ; beam, 34ft. ; bold, 22ft. Her hull is steel, with double bottom, divided into five watertight compartments, with an aggregate capacity of 285 tons water ballast. Her net registered tonnage is 1052 tons, builders, 1652 tons. Her engines compound surface condensing of 250 horse-power nominal, working up to 1500. These are supplied from four boilers each of which has two furnaces. As a speed of eleven knots but 18 tons of coal per day was the consumption. Her officers are—Chief, Mr Webster, formerly in the Eiugarooma ; second, Mr Eussell; third. Mr Phillips; chief engineer, Mr McCaig. The steamer left at 5 p.m. yesterday for Wellington, to proceed north as far as Bnssel, calling at intermediate poits.
