IRISH DISTRESS COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Irish distreiiß committee was held on Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. The l- © were present his Worship the Mayor, Messrs McDougall, Perceval, Thompson, Hobday, Pratt, Hebden, Mosley, Rev. Father G-inaty, and Mr Mitchell, hon. eccretary. The minutes of the previous meeting were duly read and confirmed. The Chairman stated that he and Mr Pratt had gathered in the subscription lists, and he regretted that the result of their labors were small. Over 100 lusts had been distributed among the banks and merchants. As to the banks, the magnificent sum of 7s 6d had been collected, that result being obtained at tho Union Bank. In justice to the manager of that bank, it should be said that he contributed £2 2s, and one of the employes ia the Bank of New Zealand had given £l. The other banks had contributed nothing. Mr Hobday suggested that the bank employes had contributed in other ways, such as buying tickets for the benelit entertainments. The Chairman then stated what had been collected on the lists, amounting in all to £25 2s 6d. ~ The Eev. Father Ginaty Baid he would have about £2O additional to subßcribe to the fund.
The Chairman eaid there were other small amounts to come in, included in which was over £l3 collected by the Rev. Zachariah of the Jewish Synagogue. A letter from Professor Hughes was read, forwarding £59 14s 6d as the result of the operatic benefit entertainment. From Mr W. Hoskins, enclosing vouchers for the expenses and receipts in connection with the dramatic benefit at the Theatre Royal, from which it appeared that the expenses exceeded the receipts by £2 13s 3d. The services of Mrs Haskine, Miss Morgan, and himself W6re given gratuitously, and Mr Beattie remitted the amount of the rent.
Mr O'Callaghan wrote, giving the result of his labours on behalf of tho fund in the country districts, and advancing cheque for £36 Is lOd, from which had to bo deducted £lO for expenses, leaving a balance of £26 Is lOd. Mr Perceval moved that the debit balance, £2 13s 3d, in the accounts of the dramatic entertainment, be forwarded to Mr Hoskins. Mr McDougall seconded the motion. A vote of thanks was accorded to Professor Hughes for his efforts in connection with the operatic entertainment. Votes of thanks wore also passed to Mr and Mrs Hoskine, Miss Lizzie Morgan, Messrs Ludford and Hull, and members of the company, who gave a dramatic performance at the Theatre Royal on behalf of the fund. After transacting some routine business, the meeting adjourned.
