KOWAI PASS COAL.
Some time since eight ramples of Malvern Hills coal were submitted to the Government analyst. Of these six were brown coal and two “ glance” or bright coal. Of these latter one was from a drive into the hill at the rear of tbe Kowai Pass store, Springfield, and was particularly noticeable as containing a very low percentage of water and ash, viz ,0 9 water, 10.4 ash. It is also of particular value for manufacturing purposes from its very gaseous nature and its heat retaining power, seeing that, unlike other Malvern Hill coal, it burns to a cinder, inatf ad of the well known white ash. When tried against tho grey coal, at a large foundry in Christchurch, the work done by a half ton of it was equal to that performed by twelve hundredweight of the grey coal. In the drive already mentioned two seams, each ot 2rt 6in, are now being worked, and it is hoped that the proprietor, Mr H. Williamson, of Kowai Pass, will be rewarded by yet better results as the work goes on.
