NEWS OF THE DAY.

Yestebdat’s Heat.—Mr J. B. Etansell, Government observer, has favored us with tho following respecting the unusually hot weather experienced yesterday :—The barometer at 9 a.m. on the 14th road 30 081, at 9 am. yesterday 29.489, and at 430 p.m. yesterday 29 403. The maximum thermometer in shade yesterday reached the great height of 92deg., and the solar radiation thermometer (black bulb) mounted to 1441eg. The degree of moisture (satuiation=loo) fell yesterday to the very low figure of 42. The direction of the wind was N.W. Yesterday was the hottest day but one that has been experienced in Canterbury since the establishment of the observatory in Christchurch. The following are the highest temperatures yet recorded :—24th January, 1871, 95.7 Fah.; 12fch January, 1879, 89.0 Fab. ; 15th Feb., 18s’0, 92.0 Fah. Bathing in the Heathcote.—A test case to day was settled at the Resident Magistrate’s Court. Three persons were brought up for bathing in the Heathcote within view of a public place. Messrs Anderson and Miles gave evidence as to the nuisance occasioned on this and other occasions, and the defendants, in view of iis being a test case, were fined Is each and costs. Pbdbstbianism.—A twenty-four hours’ walking match has been arranged between Wm. Pentecost and Charles Swan. They will walk in tho Oddfellows’ Hall, and the match will come off on Friday, March sth. The Caeahdini -tuba Company. Madame Carandini, the Misses Oarandini, Mr Shorwin, and Mr Gooch, will pay Christchurch a visit during the Easter holidays, and give a series of concerts, probably at the Oddfellows’ Hall. Accident.—A man named Samuel Long was admitted to the Hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering from an injury to his spine. He was employed at the Heathcote Valley Brick-yard, and received the injury named by falling some distance from off a plank. Obxoket Association.—A meeting of the general committee of the Cricket Association was held on Saturday evening at tho Commercial Hotel. The hon. secretary called the attention of the committee to the smallness of tho amount received as capitation fees from Clubs for tho season. After some discussion tho following resolution was passed—- “ Thar, it be an instruction to the ground committee to forthwith demand from every club using the ground a return of its playing members for the current season, and payment of capitation fees on tho numbers shown in the reiurn, and report to the next meeting to bo held in a fortnight.” Bangioea Boeough Council.—Mr B. Ellis was nominattd on Friday to fill au extraordinary vacancy in this Council. Milkmen's Picnic.—A meeting of milkmen was held at the Golden Age Hotel last night, when it was agreed to hold their annual picnic on Thursday, February 26th. Bueglaky.—A man named W. Storey was brought up on Saturday at tho Magistrate’s Court, Ashburton, charged with committing a burglary at Baldwin’s Hotel. Accused was remanded for eight days.

Howland Hill Memorial. —The following letter has been received by the Mayor of Christchurch:—“Dear Mr Mayor, —I have the honour to address you on the subject of the national memorial to Sir Rowland Hill (the founder of the penny postage system) now being promoted in this country under the auspices of an influential committee sitting at the Mansion House. The form suggested for the memorial is the foundation of a Benevolent Fund for the succour of aged and distressed Post Office employees and their widows and orphans. I enclose, for your information, copies of the resolutions passed at an influential meeting of citizens of London held here recently, and other particulars, showing the need of some such as that for which I am appealing. The committee are strongly impressed with the belief that the colonies wi 1 willingly render their assistance in this work, oloking to the great advantages which they have derived in the cheapening of the postage to and from the Mother country, and it is with, that feeling that I venture as Lord Mayor, to bespeak your kindly aid in promoting subscriptions in your city. I may add that 160 English, Scotch, and Irish Mayors are collecting subscriptions in their various towns. (Signed) E. Wyatt Tbuscott, Lord Mayor of London.” The letter will bo considered at the City Council meeting tonight. Rechaeites. —The Independent Order of Bechabites in New Zealand will hold their annual council in Christchureh this week. Representatives from all parts of the colony are expected to be present. Several prominent members of the order will arrive by the Ringarooma to-morrow morning. The meeting of the council in Ohristchu r ch will be inaugurated by a public “ soiree ” in the Templar Ha'l to-morrow evening, followed by a public meeting. Several gentlemen connected with the order are announced to give addresses. Oddfellows’ Hall.— Mr M. Mosley will reply to-night at the Oddfellows’ Hall, to some statements made in a recent lecture by Mr Chiniqny respecting the Irish famine. City Council. —The usual weekly meeting of the City Council will be held at seven o’clock this evening. Sydenham Borough Council. —This body will hold its meeting to-night. Accident Insurance Company.— lt is notified that Mr Thomas Gill has been appointed local and canvassing agent for this company in Christchurch. Oddfbllowship. —A summoned meeting of the < ity of Christchurch Lodge, Manchester Unity, will be held this evening, to receive the auditors’ report and balance-sheet, and to transact other business.
