WAIRABAPA RACES. [By Telegraph.] WELLINGTON, February 12. The Wairarapa races were held to-day. The attendance was about 1500. The heat was intense, and everyone glad when the events were decided.
The weight for age races were run to-day. The handicaps will be run to-morrow. The class of horses is very inferior, especially the young stock which competed in the Champagne Stakes and Southern Chief’s Produce Stakes. This is in consequence of no good blood mares being owned in the district. The races were run to time, and the officials worked hard, especially Mr Girdleston, secretary, and Mr Masters, starter.
Produce Stakes of 30 sovs, for horses bred and trained in the district, that have never started prior to the Ist November, 1879. Weight for age. Distance, li miles. Entrance, 2 sovs. Mr Thomson’s Patana, by Don Juan, 6 yrs (Bremner) 1 Mr Strange’s Flycatcher, A yrs 2 Mr Ward’s Volunteer, 4 yrs ... ... ... 3 Ninette, Mmetta, Topic, and Earnest also ran. Betting—2 to 1 agst Ninette, 4 to 1 agst the others. Patana was in front throughout, and won easily. A protest was entered, but disallowed. Wairabapa Stakes, of 75 »ots, ; weight for age ; two miles and a distance. Mr Vallance’s Lara, aged ... (Nolan) 1 Mr C-isey’s Romeo, 6 yrs ... 2 Mr Murray’s Tamatea, 6 yrs ... (Kraft) 3 Betting—3 to lon Lara, who laid off until entering the straight, and then passing Tamatea and Romeo won easily by a neck from the latter. Maiden Plate, of 40 sovs ; weight for age ; U miles. Mr Murray’s Pourere, 6 yrs ... (Kraft) 1 Mr Tiono’s Papawai, G yrs ... 2 Mr Thomson’s Merino, 3 yrs ... ... ... 3 In the Hack Race, of 10 sovs, once round, Grey’s Annie beat the others easily. Champagne Stakes of 25 sovs ; for twa-year-olds ; six furlongs. Mr Winteringham’s b g War, by Don Juan (Dorse) 1 Mr Buckridga’s Whitau and Mr Fabin’s Luck also ran, but bolted. The race was won in a canter. Betting—3 to 1 on War. Southern Chief’s Produce Stakes, for three-year-olds ; a mile aud a half; 25 sovs. Mr Eatnio’s Kakatau (Owner) 1 Mr Casey’s Mountain Deer 2 Mr Yallanco’s Ninette ... ... ... 3 Blue Bonuet, Flying Perfection aud Lapwing also ran. Kakatau led throughout and won easily by three lengths. The acceptances for the C.J. Handicap Cup are— Lara | Romeo Laertes I Tim Whiffler Acceptances for the Hurdles are— Tamatea I Te Whotu Kangaroo I Pourere
