The brigantine Island Lily arrived at Chatham Islands hence on January 21st, making an excellent run of two days. The vessel, it will be remembered, lost a boat on leaving here, which was returned to port by the steamer Rotorua, The Lyttelton Harbor Board employes picnic will taka place next Saturday at Little Akaloa, the excursionists to be conveyed thither in the "'• steamer Lyttelton. H.M.S. CORMORANT. It is not often that the port is visited by any of Her Majesty’s ships, aid less often that they are brought so conveniently near for communicating with as has been dune in the case of the above man-of-war, which arrived yesterday, by bringing her right in between the moles to a mooring inside the Gladstone pier._ Theve-sel is from Wellington, where she remained for two or three weeks, leaving there at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. She was signalled yesterday afternoon, and the harbor master went off and brought her in as above. She is comparatively of small tonnage, 1137 gross, but has a great beam, an advautigo which enables her to bring five of her six heavy ordnance on a broadside. She was built but two years since at Chatham, and put in commission six months later, her present commission of three yeora on the Australian station. Before coming to New Zealand she was for some time cruising among the islands, and was engaged conveying the Governor of Fiji to and fro on Governmental business. From Fiji she came on to Auckland, to which port it is probable she will return after a stay here of two or three weeks. The Cormorant is composite built, that style of construction having come more into favor of late years for war vessels of her size. Right up from her water line to her bulwarks she is lined with steel plates as a protection to the crew from splinters. Her guns are six in number —two Tin. four and a half ton guns, carrying a projectile of USibs, and four 64-ponnders—two on trucks and two on slides. She is altogether a handsome and complete vessel and will well repay a visit. She is rigged as a barque, and under sail alone has logged eleven knots. Her steam power consists of compound engines of 850 indicated horsepower. driving a patent feathering screw, and capable of giving her a speed of eleven and a half knots. The peculiarity of the screw is said to be that when not in use the blades lie fore and aft, thus reducing the resistance when the vessel is under sail. Her full complement of jnen is 140, including the following officers: — Commander, James T. Bruce ; Lieutenants, Charles M. Luckcraft, Valentine D. Hughe, George Hodgkinson ; Sub-Lieutenant, C. E. Baxter: Staff-Surgeon, John Horrocks, M D.; paymaster, H. B. Robinson; chief engineer, Samuel J. Bird ; surgeon, Thomas H. Lewis ; engineer, George Harding; gunner, James Trey hern; carpenter, James ii. Elliott; clerk, Alfred E. Bouchier.
During her stay. Thursdays and Sundays will probably be the days upon which she will be open to the pnblio.
