The ship British Empire, now at Auckland, will come on here to load, being one of the vessels chartered by Messrs. Cunningham and Co. and Messrs. Eoyse, Stead and Co. for the grain season. The schooner Pelican was taken on Mr Miller’s slip yesterday for an overhaul. Auckland harbor, according to_ the local press, is fast silting up. Soundings taken alongside the long wharf on the 2nd current showed that where the depth of water twelve months’ eince was 18 feet, it is now but 16 feet, and in spots 14ft. 6in. The “ Herald ” blames the Harbor Board, and statss that that body has .oat the public confidence by its mismanagement. Several instances are cited of vessels being berthed at the pier at a very groat peril, and a sense of danger is said to be felt at berthing the mail steamer. The s.s. Southern Cross, Captain Helander, arrived yesterday from Auckland and way porta, and will leave to-day on the return trip. The s.s. Arawata, Captain Sinclair, arrived yesterday from Sydney and porta of the East Coast. She left Sidney on the 28th January, Auckland February sth, and called at Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington leaving the latter port at 3.45 p.m. on Monday. She sailed for Port nalmer at 4 p.m. yesterday. SHIPPING TELEGBAMS. New Plymouth,’ February 11. _ The Tairoa arrived here at six o’clock this morning, and left at 8 a m., with the San Francisco mail. Tho captain could not pick up the land owing to the mist. Passengers—Miss Beamish, Mrs Omeara and child, Messrs Haselden, Young, Fox, Paulding, Claughton, and Lee. Auckland, February 10. The s.s Taiaroa sailed South at 10 a.m. from Manukan with tho Southern portion of the San Francisco mails. Passengers—For Dunedin : Messrs. Colling and Wolahaw. For Bluff: Mr Kennedy. The City of New York sailed for Sydney at at 6.20 p.m. The ship Palala, Captain Painter, sailed from London on December 21st for Canterbury. Port Chalmers, February 10.
