Sib, —You will oblige me by publishing the enclosed letter in your columns, the contents of which I feel certain will be most gratifying to the people of Canterbury, especially to those who take an interest in trying to relieve the distress of their fellow creatures. Christchurch, Fob. 7th, 1880. “ Christchurch, 6th February, 1880. “Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge your letter dated the 28th January, 1880, referring to what is being done by th j Irish Relief Fund Association for the relief of the distress which prevails in Ireland, and stating that it is the earnest wish of the committee and promised supporters of the movement that assistance should be rendered by the railway department by granting free carriage for all produce contributed for the benefit of the fund. In reply I have to inform you that, having submitted your letter to the Hon. Minister for Public Works, that gentleman has authorised me to convey, free of charge for carriage, all grain which may bo given for the objects of the association, and that the General Manager has been instructed accordingly. “ I have the honor to be, Sir, “ Your obedient servant, “O.
