CHRISTCHURCH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A meeting was held last evening in the rooms of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Present —Mr B, O. J. Stevens (in the chair), Messrs G. A. Rsade, J. A. Bird, T. Allen, E. Jones, O. Marsh, J. Gray, Arrangements were made for carrying out the art union in connection with the Autumn Show, and Messrs B. O. J. Stevens, F. Jones, and G. A. Reade were appointed to purchase prizes. The secretary was instructed to communicate with absent members and request them to canvass for gifts as prizes. Mr G. A. Reade exhibited a number of trusses of his fine seedling verbena, “ Mrs Reade,” and also a pure white viola and a very fine Belgian pansy. CURE FOR SCAB. Those interested in squatting pursuits, especially in the northern parts of this island where scab is now so rife, will be pleased to hear that a new specific for the cure of this disease has lately been tried with most encouraging results in the Marlborough district. The preparation referred to is Little’s Chemical Fluid, the new nonpoisonous sheep dip, and it was tried on 300 scabby sheep, at a strength c£ one to 100. The sheep were immersed in the wash about two minutes, and were then placed in a secure paddock. They were examined ten daygr afterwards by the inspector of the district and other competent ju Iges, who were present when the sheep were dipped, and all were highly satisfied with the result. The insect life was completely destroyed and the skin had quite recovered its natural appearance. It is confidently believed that a second dipping, in order to destroy the eggs, will thoroughly cleanse the sheep. As it is used with cold water, is easily applied, has, it is said, no poisonous ingredient in it, and leaves the wool soft and bright without interfering with the yolk, the result of this trial will be bailed with immense satisfaction by all interested in the eradication of scab.
