PICNIC.

The employee of Mr D. Reese, builder, with their wives and families, held their picnic at Sumner on Saturday last. The vehicles, numbering fourteen, mustered at the workshop, situated at the corner of Durham and Lichfield streets, several being very nicely decorated with flowers and evergreens. A start was made at nine o , clock a.m., the van being led by Bunz’s brass band. On arrival at Sumner the following sports were indulged in the course being measured out on the hard sandy beach : —250 yards handicap, open to the whole in the establishment—lst, D. Reese; 2nd, J. Scott. 150 yards handicap, for apprentices under 20 years —Ist, J. Lock ; 2nd, D. Hay. 150 yards handicap, for carpenters —Ist, James Grey; 2nd, Wm. Newton. 100 yards handicap, for bricklayers—lst, G. Innes; 2nd, O. Dyke. 150 yards handicap, for plasterers—lst, Moss ; 2nd Guthrie. 150 yards handicap, for masons—lst, Lock ; 2nd, Forrester. 100 yards handicap, for pahrera — Ist, T. Reese, senr.; 2nd, J. Wills. 100 yards race, for married women over 40 years —Ist, Mrs Wilson; 2nd, Mrs Smellie. 100 yards race, for married women under 40 years —Ist, Mrs Tullock ; 2nd, Mrs Scrimgeour. Married and single women’s race, 100 yards ; single women to bo married within twelve months, if not to forfeit the prize—Ist, Miss Hay ; 2nd, Mrs Hickman. 100 yards handicap race, for carters —Ist, Wm, Brunsdea ; 2nd, D Greenwood. 100 yards three-legged race, for boys—lst, T. Reese and R. Scott; 2nd, Hay and Lincocfc. Dancing, rounders, and other games were indulged till six o'clock. Three hearty cheers were given for Mr D. Reese, Mr D. Scott (the foreman), and the committee, on leaving the ground, and also on reaching home. The handicaps for the 250 yards race and all other men’s r£.ces were arranged on the principle of one yard for every year over twenty.
