A PATRIARCH OF THE CHURCH.
One of the patriarchs of the English Church, to whom Cardinal Manning was formerly curate, died in his ninety-third year on the Bth November. The Bev. James Tripp was of an old landed family in Somersetshire, who changed their name from Howard in the time of Henry _Y. He was bnrn on his mother's property in Sussex in 1787, and was educated at Midhurst School with the late Lord Leconfield, with whom he had a lifelong intimacy. He took his degree at Cambridge in ISOO, and was ordained by Bishop Brownlow North iu 1810 in a private chapel in Cheyne walk, Chelsea —a curious contrast to modern times. He spent the first part of his life in various euros in Sussex, provided for him by Chnrlea O'Brien, Lord much amused by a violent attack on him by William Oobbett, in one of his " Bural Bides," on the ground that he had not found a house large enough for his family in his remote mountain parish. There have been few clergymen more assiduous in their work. In middle life ho was obliged to spend four years in Madeira for asthma. He was afterwards appointed by Lord Leconfield to the beam if ul living of Kirkby Overblow, in Yorkshire, ai:d'in 1547 to the great rectory of Spofforth, -hich he held at the time of hid death. Mr Tripp was an earnest Evangelical, and was acquainted with Thomas Scott, the commentator, and other fathers cf that school. Besides rebuilding the large parish church at Spofforth, he erected three chapelries and schools in the villages of his huge parish. Till the last few weeks of his life he was accustomed to spend many hours hours daily in the saddle unattended, in parochi-d visitation, constantly preached, and attended to all the affairs of his charge. He had only a few days' illness from bronchitis, and died in the full possession of his memory and faculties. His great age, firm character, earnest devotion to his duties, and strong practical judgment won him high respect from all classes who knew him in West Sussex and tho West Hiding.
