[MELBOURNE " AKGUS " SPECIAL.] LONDON, February 7. The Strathleven Experiment.
One hundred and fifty colonists and others lunched on board the Strathleven yesterday. All were highly gratified at the success of the experiment. The Melbourne mutton and beef were sold at Smithfield to-day. The market was low at first. Sixty sheep sold at sixpence per lb., and the remainder at fivepence half-penny to sixpence. Beef brought a fraction over five-pence. It is pronounced more saleable by a penny per lb. over the American this week. The mutton is one half-penny less than English meat. The leading butchers are highly pleased, and say the meat equals anything seen. Salesmen could take 10,000 sheep weekly.

The result of the Liverpool electioa for replacing John Torr, a Tory, was the election of Whitley, also a Tory, by a majority of 2000 over Lord Ramsay, the Liberal candidate, who, in consequence of agreeing as to the desirableness of a parliamentary enquiry into the question of Home Rule for Ireland, received the Irish block vote.
February 7 The Irish Question-
In the House of Commons, Mr W. A. Redmond, member for Wexford, moved an amendment to the Address, condemning the Government for not having taken steps to alleviate the distress in Ireland by making advances to the tenantry, and demanding from the Chancellor of the Exchequer that detailed measures be at once taken. In the course of the debate, the Hon. D. Plunkett, member for Dublin University, denounced the course pursued by Mr Parnell. The debate was adjourned. Very Accommodating. It has been mutually determined to suspend operations in the war between Chili and Pern till next autumn. BOMBAY, February 8. Afghan Affairs. The Afghan WarThe latest news from Afghanistan states that Mahomed Jan has taken up a strong position with the army of Kohistans beyond Gundamak, with the intention of intercepting supplies to Cabul.

The president of the Paris Chamber of Commerce has publicly eulogised the enterprise of Victoria, and has promised the exhibition every assistance. Italy will arrange to be officially represented at the exhibition.
