WELLINGTON RACES.

[By Teleoeaph.]

Second Day, Fbiday, Febbuaby 6,

Lovely weather favored the meeting, the only drawback being dust, which perfectly blinded passengers in the traps between the station and the course. . His Excellency, Lady Robinson and suite arrived before the first race. The attendance was far below that of yesterday, numbering about 1500. The totalisator was again freely patronised. Hills put through £750. The bookmakers are perfectly taken aback at his success, and some were to be seen, their own occupation abandoned, taking chances on their own account. No listmen appeared on the ground. Mr Young acted efficiently as starter, and Mr Lyons, the secretary, did his best to render the meeting a success. Not a single protest was entered, and no serious accident occurred. The time for the Handicap was the fastest ever made in New Zealand. The following are details:— Empike Plate of 100 soys; one mile and a quarter. Mintey’s c g Harkaway, aeed, flat (Owner) 1 Young’s Sailor, aged, 9st 81bs ... (Eydeu) 2 Betting—2 to lon Harkaway. Sailor led for half tne distance, Harkaway then went to the front, and drawing away at the finish, won by a dozen lengths easily.

Htjbdle Handicap of 75 sovs ; two miles. MTvor’s g g Grey Momus, aged, list (John Rae) 1 Desmond’s Kangaroo, aged, flat 101 b (Higgiuson) 2 Butler’s Te Whetn, aged, list 21bs (Wheeler) 3 Bay’s Lonehand, Keith’s Ada, and Pourere also ran. Tamatea was scratched.

Betting—2 to 1 agst Momus, 3 to 1 agst Lonehand and Te Whetu, 6 to 1 agst the others.

All the horses jumped splendidly until Lonehand baulked at the fourth hurdle, getting over at the second attempt. Pourere and Kangaroo who led at starting gave way to Ada after going half a mile, Momus taking it easy last. The second time round Te Whetu went to the front, and Momus began to go up. The latter went through the horses very quickly and collared the leader at the last hurdle. The race was now over, Mclvor’s grey having Te Whetu beaten at the distance, and winning by two lengths in a canter. Kangaroo came again in the last hundred yards, and passed Te Whetu at the post. Lonehand last. Racing Club Handicap of 200 sovs; li-

miles. Mr Yallance’s Vampire, 6 yrs (Webster) 1 Mr Walter’s Hippo (Hudson 2 Mr Goodman’s Chancellor ... (Endings; 3 All started except Templeton, who was scratched. The flag fell to an excellent start. Vampire on the inside first showed in front, with Magnolia close up second, Chancellor third, and Hailstorm, who moved very stiffly, last. On the far side Hippo went up to the leaders, and Webster took a pull at Vampire and dropped back into the third place. Hailstorm now mended his pace, and joined Chancellor, Laertes, and Eandwick in ruck. Crossing the road Hippo and Magnolia led, with Vampire on their quarters. Hailstorm at the end of the turn began flogging, and, Magnolia giving way, at the entrance to the straight Vampire challenged Hippo. A splendid race ensued, but Vallanoe’s horse always had the best of it, and won cleverly by a neck. Time, 2min. 42sccs. Betting—3 to 1 agst Hailstorm and Vampire ; 5 to 1 agst Hippo ; 8 to 1 agst the others.

Ladies’ Purse, of 30 sovs. 1-J- miles. Walters’ Billingsgate ,

Gentry’s Talent 2 Murray’s Tamatea 3 All the rest were scratched. Betting—Even on Billingsgate and Talent; 5 to 1 agst Tamatea. Billingsgate went away with a slight lead of Talent, both , going right away from Tamatea at once. On the far aide Walters’ colt came back to the maiden winner, and both raced side by side half a mile. At the end of the turn Billingsgate again showed in front, and his opponent being in trouble at the distance, won easily by a length. Time, 2min. 55sec. Consolation Race of 30 sovs. One mile. Keith’s Soukar, 7st ... 1 Redwood’s Magnolia, 6st 71b 2 Horsfall’s Ratcatcher, 6st 121 b ... ... 3 Chancellor and Eore also started.

Soukar was favorite both in the betting and totalisator, and justified the public support awarded him by waiting on Msgnolia and Ratcatcher for half the distance and then passing, winning easily by four lengths.
