Esq , J.P.’s.] Dbunk and DisoaDEBLY.—A woman was fined 40s.

Vaqbancy. Callaghan McCarthy was charged with haring no lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Morioe said that the accused came to the police depot the previous evening and gave himself up. He said he was without a home and completely destitute. He had been refused admission to the Ashburton Home, of which he had been an inmate ; but, having left the home without permission, and had misconducted himself, they would not readmit him. He was physically unfit to earn a living. The accused made a long statement, and was remanded to Addington for a week. Attempting to Commit Suicide. ~Thos. Casbon was charged with attempting to commit suicide. Constable McGill stated that on the morning of the 27th ultimo it was reported to him that the defendant had attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat. He proceeded to Mr Parker’s between Hcathcote and Opawa, where the defendant was, and found him in a very weak state with three cuts in his throat, self inflicted. Witness took him to the Hospital, where he had since been attended to. He had now recovered. The defendant told him he had made the attempt through low spirits. In answer to the Bench the defendant said that intemperance was the primary cause of his attempting self-destruetien, but for the ■future he had made up his mind to lead a temperate life. Under the circumstances the Bench discharged the man. RANGIORA. Tuesday, Fedbuaby 3. ■(Before J. Beswick, Ecq., R.M., and A. H. Cunningham, Esq.) Laechny of a Cheque. —William Buckley, arrested on warrant in Christchurch for larceny of a cheque for £5, drawn on the 'Union Bank of Australia by W. Horne, manager of Cheviot Hills station, in favor of E. Inwood, was brought up in custody. Lawson Ridley, boarding-house keeper, Bangiora, stated that he cashed the cheque iu question for accused, and on paying it into his account at the Bank of New Zealand found that payment of it was stopped. Inspector Buckley applied for a remand to produce witnesses He stated that the cheque had been enclosed in a letter by In wood and given to the care of a person named Jack, by whom it had been lost. Eemand granted for a fortnight. Accused admitted to bail in two sureties of £25 each.

Civil Oases. —Judgments were given for ■plaintiffs in the following cases; —F. Sendall T J. Francis, £1 17s 4d ; Sime vD. Fitzgerald, £ll 16s 2d; F. Toole v George i&orrie, £24 8s 3d; J. Borriok y J. Whyte, £26 6s. J. W. Francis vT. B. Browning, £1 12s ; amount to be paid in twenty-four hours or one week’s imprisonment. Same vC. H. ■Crother, £1 12s; similar order as in former case.

OXFORD. Wednesday, Febkdaet 4. [Before J. Beswiok, Esq., R.M.J Civil Oases. —F. Newland r W. Stout, £l, for illegal detention of the keys of the Mechanics’ Institute. A cross action was also heard, in which the past and present committees of the institute were involved, in ■which the claim was £5 for taking forcible possession of the library and reading room. The Resident Magistrate considered the first committee duly elected, and gave judgment against Mr Stout for the amount claimed, and in the second case entered a nonsuit.
